My almost 10 month old has been having increasingly messy nappies over the last two days and the last two nappies have been dark in colour and a bit mucousy (apologies for the disgusting detail). He seems a little subdued but ate all 3 meals w usual gusto and is pretty chipper - did usual happy shouting all thru dinner!

He has been getting a tooth through - but its his 6th tooth and i havent noticed anything unusual previously when he's been teething?

What worried me a bit was the dark colour - very dark brown almost black? We were away over weekend and he had a couple of prepackaged pasta sauces he hadnt tried before. But the last 24 hours has been food he is used to. Should i be feeding him something special/ taking him to doctors. He's still breastfed evenings and mornings and has had some extra milk today and lots of water (as usual cause he loves drinking out of his sippy cup)

Any ideas/tips? Should i be worried by the poo!?

What they eat can have a huge impact on size, consistency and colour of their poo. First time my son had any spinach (and it wasn't much at all) his poos a couple of days later were reeeeaaalllly dark.

But. Check the ingredients of the pasta sauce and then to put your mind at rest, perhaps book an appointment with the GP. If there's mucous, that implies irritation maybe. Might be worth just getting checked out.

Hi reren, In my (limited) experience, if there's really something wrong, you'll know about it. My son started picking up tummy bugs of varying intensity on a regular basis at about 10 months - some were just a long run of grim nappies, where he was cheery throughout (even if I wasn't!), others were obviously really making him feel unwell - he was very very subdued and clingy. For what it's worth, my advice is if he seems cheery in himself, just make sure he's getting enough fluids, stick to his usual diet, and don't worry too much. For my son, 10 months represented a bit of a threshold of new levels of mobility and hence new levels of germ exposure.

I do now give him an infant probiotic supplement daily, and I think that may be helping with his overall digestive health - health matters on lship lane have several brands - udo's choice seemed to me to be the best.

Hope this helps!

    • Pity you didn't quote what you are referring to, Mal. I didn't see the previous post, and my mind is boggling 😮
    • The Cherry Tree was absolutely excellent for a while when a youngish couple ran it and brought in a really good chef. It was them who renamed it The Cherry Tree. They were really turning it around. The chef did fantastic Scotch eggs, and one of the best roasts I've ever had. If memory serves the then owner,  for some reason known only to himself, took a dislike to them and what they were doing and sacked them all. And yes we weren't expecting a top class  meal last Christmas, and we left it too late to book anywhere else, but we weren't expecting it for a hundred pounds EACH to be quite as terrible as it was. Stupid us. Not sure why you are confused by my post, Jazzer? Did I misremember? Now it's got even more confusing because my posts have been merged and your confused emoji is shown at the bottom of the second one instead of the first 🤣
    • Hear hear. Very well said. Thank you and all the best for the year ahead
    • Tried months ago, to get folk together to do something, to say thank you. Been a member of the forum for years and if you had not stepped up, would not be an active  forum. Well administered as well. So from me to you, thanks for keeping it going..  Happy Christmas and blessings and good fortune in 2026 which I am told is The Year of The Horse….
