social cycle ride 10am Saturday May 12th

Recommended Posts

this is a loop between Canada Water and Hilly Fields in Lewisham. It starts at 10am from Deal Porter Square, next to Canada Water Library and opposite CW Station, SE16 7AR and returns two hours later to the same place. There is a lift at Canada Water Station which takes bikes so it's very accessible on the Overground.

I'm told that riders did so well climbing Hilly Fields last time they went that way that the organisers have decided to do it again from the other direction. Which just shows you should never try too hard.

Any way, done now. This ride heads off past Greenland Dock to the bridge over the railway at Oldfield Grove and then across Deptford mostly off road to New Cross. Entirely legal shared-use pavement and crossings take everyone safely through the New Cross/Lewisham Way junction followed by mostly uphill on side roads to Hilly Fields.

The ride will stop to admire the views and for a loo break. Then quite steeply down from Hilly Fields to Lewisham Leisure Centre and National Route 21 through Brookmill Park and on to the Thames, coming out beside the new bridge and Peter the Great.

All being well the way back will be along the lovely Thames Path route to South Dock and then inland back to Canada Water. If time is short the ride may take a short cut back along Q1 (which is always worth finding for those that don't know it) and Surrey Canal Linear Path. That's 9 miles, lots of off road. The route is here:

These rides are organised by Bruce Lynn and friends on behalf of Southwark Cyclists which is the borough branch of the London Cycling Campaign. Our website is here: https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk. Everything we do is free -- if anyone tells you differently smile ingratiatingly and back away quietly. For more info text Bruce on 07729 279 945 or email us at [email protected] for more info on all borough-related cycling matters -- who could resist?

    • I would leave London, or at a push move back to north London. In SE London if you want to get away in a car you are trapped, always an hour to go the first 10 miles, chugging up to the M4 or round the south circular, which is really just a line someone drew connecting a load of roads. and I know there are trains but first you have to get to those mainline stations, unless you only want to leave London to go to Kent. which I don't.
    • It was you who  made it personal in the first place,  Jazzer. You said you didn't feel safe in the streets,  and you said you didn't go to Central London because you didn't feel safe there. So are you now saying that wasn't "personal"? "Fire from the hip." Another interesting choice of words 🙄 I'm not "demanding" anything! I asked you some perfectly reasonable questions in  response to your own statements. None of which you have answered. Never mind. It seems to be pointless having a discussion with you. It's long past my bedtime. I'm going to turn on my sleep app  and go to sleep 😴💤
    • Hi Forumites, This afternoon someone in a dark blue/black saloon car collided with my parked car on Thompson Road, SE22 9JR. I have a neighbour’s doorbell cam footage of the collision at 14:30 19/09/2025 but am unable to identify the registration plate. If anyone has footage of a car travelling down Thompson Road towards Crystal Palace Road at that time please PM me. Of course if the Perp would like to confess they can also PM me. Thankyou.
    • Fireworks again tonight, Melbourne Grove North LTN area.
