David Cameron has launched a new campaign to boost tourism and investment to the UK, showing what makes Britain "Great". Do you agree? Or are there other things they've missed? Reasons Britain is Great.

Cart before the horse bares to mind.

Don't knock it - tourism is a huge earner for UK.

In the run up to the Olympics, of which this is part of the marketing campaign, it makes sense to "accentuatethe positives" and encourage people to look well upon UK. If successful it can only benefit us all. As for the PM having more important things to do - sure that argument can be made, but his imprimature does help generate publicity, which this is all about.

It not the tourism I am knocking, MM yes it will generate a lot of money. Politicians need to be more honest and transparent and the coalition I mean the Tory government needs to tackle the issues at home I wonder what the world must be thinking after the riots Britain not so great.

Not really sure what you are trying to say here, Ridgely. Cameron should have announced a new 'honest' tourism campaign along the lines of "Britain: Yes, We're In The S*** But Come Visit Us Anyway".

Or are you saying that Cameron shouldn't be spending time with one of the country's big money generators?

I really don't follow what you are saying here.

What like unemployment - which more jobs in tourism would help reduce?

Ok I agree we need to sort out some of the social issues, but if there aren't jobs for people to go to there's a limit to how far we can solve crime. And I am not sure that he isn't trying to deal with issues at home - it's just a longer term game - results won't be seen overnight.

Yes Ridgely I do agree that we should have a campaign to boost tourism. I think it goes hand in hand with creating much needed employment esp in rural areas. The landscape and coastline around Britain is so beautiful, its one of our strengths. Unfortunately, the recent riots deterred a lot of people from visiting, and its an image of Britain that was in stark contrast to that portrayed by the Royal wedding a few months earlier.

Mind you, this isn't exactly a good advert*....:-S [pre]

(*I don't read the Mail, honest guv, someone emailed it to me in relation to something else but it made me think of this thread, sadly)

How about the Great London Maze Game.you have to find a road that hasnt been blocked, narrowed, or special for officials

of the Olympics,or congestion charge and bus lane free.

Or a tour of all the unfinished roads, dug up parks and the theme park that was once a place called Greenwich a noble historic area.

The Olympics are as dead as the origional, its just a scam for the rich to get richer, their are no true large benfits for us Londoners, the homes they will build will be for rich people.

We have paid heavily for this charade,it should be reduced to just sport, all this building in all these countries, are just lining contractors pockets.

The worlds fed up with it now.I know I am.

    • I’m not a Gail’s fan but there’s no reason a business shouldn’t open on Christmas Day. However, nobody should be compelled to work the day which, given the widespread coverage of Gail’s questionable employment practices, has to be a possibility here.  The only business I ever use on the 25th is maybe a pub and that’s a rarity these days but buses running would be very welcome for visiting etc. But the swings in the park should definitely remain chained up. Are parks even open on Christmas Day?
    • To be honest, pal, it's not good being a fan of a local business and then not go there. One on hand, the barber shop literally next door to Romeo Jones started serving coffee. The Crown and Greyhound and Rocca serve coffee. Redemption Coffee opened up not far away, and then also Megan's next door to that. DVillage was serving coffee (but wasn't very popular), as was Au Ciel (which is). Maybe also Heritage Cheese, I don't know. There's also Flotsam and Jetsam doing coffee and sandwiches at Dulwich Picture Gallery in the other direction. The whole of Dulwich Village serves coffee. And yet on the other hand, there are enough punters to support all good coffee shops. With the exception of Rocca and Megan's (which are both big spaces) and C&G (which does coffee like everything else - slow and with bad service), all these places regularly get queues out the door. Gail's often has big queues and yet very few people crossed the street to Romeo Jones (which was much better)... Half the staff at Gail's are perfectly fine and efficient. The other half are pretty offhand and rude. It's certainly not welcoming or friendly service. But they're certainly hard working, and no doubt raking the money in for Luke Johnson...
    • Well according to a newspaper article, Gail’s is opening 10 shops in London,,, yup Dulwich is named 10/5 I seem to recall with others in London opening at 7 am…!, Guess that is to capture workers coming off all night shift. Offering free mince pies until they run out.. So very sad to hear about Romeo Jones… been a customer since the opening, any idea where Patrick has gone or details… please pm me.    What is going to be in its place…. Will be around in Jan…umm village is changing….
