DulwichFox
One Tree HillOn 1 May 1602, Elizabeth I picnicked with Sir Richard Bulkeley of Beaumaris in the Lewisham area by an oak tree at the summit of a hill. The tree came to be known as the Oak of Honor. The tree surrounded by railings is an oak, and was planted c1905 and a successor to the historic one.Source:- Here.Fox Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/19731-where-was-queen-elizabeth-i-on-1-may-1602/#findComment-477418 Share on other sites
edhistory
Thanks, DulwichFox,In this instance it is possible that Wikipedia, several hundred web-sites, and various local history books are all wrong.I am interested in locating a reference to the original source.John K Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/19731-where-was-queen-elizabeth-i-on-1-may-1602/#findComment-477425 Share on other sites

Mr Chamberlain's letter here.http://www.archive.org/stream/chamberlainlette00camduoft#page/132/mode/2upThere is another reference here, not sure what the primary reference is (search down for "Sydmondscourt") http://sydenham.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?p=5168[edit] maybe someone can work out if this is helpful for sourcing.http://www.archive.org/stream/elizabethanstage04chamuoft#page/114/mode/2up Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/19731-where-was-queen-elizabeth-i-on-1-may-1602/#findComment-478185 Share on other sites
edhistory
Many thanks for the references Mike.A pity the sydenham.org.uk posting does give sources. I'm intrigued about the 1719 reference.Next question: what did the queen do on 1 May 1602?John K Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/19731-where-was-queen-elizabeth-i-on-1-may-1602/#findComment-478417 Share on other sites

mikeb
Two more sources dating the name "Oak of Honour" back to 1608 and 1612. 1608 doc might be available at Kewhttp://www.archive.org/stream/storyofonetreehi00nisbrich#page/10/mode/2uphttp://www.archive.org/stream/proceedingsoflew02lewi#page/118/mode/2up Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/19731-where-was-queen-elizabeth-i-on-1-may-1602/#findComment-479709 Share on other sites
