social cycle ride starts 9.30am Sat July 21st

Recommended Posts

This one is called By Air and Under Sea. I'm not sure if the Thames really counts as the sea at Greenwich. but it's a very good title for a very good ride. The Air bit is definitely right -- the ride starts at 9.30am at the Cutty Sark next to the foot tunnel (SE10 9HT) and follows the Thames Path to the O2 and the Emirates Airline.

The Airline is very bike friendly and photogenic. It costs ?3.50 so bring your Oyster or contactless card. The arrival point is a bit arid but the group won't hang around. On disembarking they will head up towards the Olympic Park, crossing a couple of parks and taking the Greenway.

A coffee stop is planned at one of the cafes in the Olympic Park followed by a quick tour of park going past the Velodrome, Copper Box and up round the London Stadium, exiting by the View Tube.

Return route takes them along the River Lee down to Three Mills, over Twelvetrees Crescent Bridge and along the south Lee path to Cody Dock. The group then cuts down to Dock Road and picks up the Thames pathway back to the Greenwich foot tunnel. Flat ride, lots of traffic-free bits, everyone welcome. Ends at 1pm by the foot tunnel.

This series of Saturday rides (some longer than others) is free and open to everyone. They are organised and mostly led by Bruce Lynn on behalf of Southwark Cyclists who are the borough branch of the London Cycling Campaign. Contact Bruce on 07729 279 945 for more information.

    • How about trying the upstairs of some local pubs like EDT? They prob won't stay open until wee small hours but worth a try... or night at Rivoli Ballroom Catford (too old?!) or somewhere up in town for drinks rather than hiring somewhere.
    • Sadly crime does seem to be going up in terms of opportunists and street crime / bike thefts etc. Lack of CCTV in this area means it's more of a target than some neighbouring areas according to police (when they sent victim support round after our car had its catalytic converter stolen twice in 6 months by organised gang complete with balaclavas, iron bars and a chainsaw.. driving a 4x4). Crime still relatively low by some parts of London standards but a worrying trend if burglars are trying their luck when people are actually home. Wonder what local police/ MP thoughts are in terms of whether they could organise more community policing patrols. I read a woman was punched in the face on/near Lordship Lane in an unprovoked attack a week or two ago. Terrifying.
    • We had shutters and roller blind supplied and fitted by Affordable Shutters when we first moved into our house in 2012 and highly recommend them. One of the poles and a couple of shutter staples recently came loose and they scheduled in a visit when they were in the area at no charge. Lovely customer service, great quality, honestly cannot fault their service (shutters are made to measure so you have to wait but they're worth waiting for). https://affordableshutters.co.uk/
