Smugness.

The problem is in thinking it's a bad thing to feel when it's only a bad thing to express. Never heard anyone say they hated feeling smug. There's a reason it's so close to snug. And perhaps it explains why smugglers always look so pleased with themselves.

Agree I don't quite understand the ED urge to continue procreating beyond the hallowed norm of 2.4 kids

So, anyway, when can we expect ED to return to being a non-smug sleepy 'burb content with the shopping facilities offered by its local Coop and Iceland?

Say for the sake of argument that there are three sprogs in the typical incoming family described by Mr Ben. Assume that they are spaced a sensible 3 years apart, and they grow out of scooters at around 5 years old.

Then, it only takes about 11 years for said family to reach the end of its scooter-usage phase. That takes us to 2022.

Family decides to move to Surrey/Kent/France when middle kid is 10-ish, following oldest kid's horrendous experience of Charter/Harris Carpet Academy/Kingsdale - that adds another couple of years to the timeline.

So, probably not before 2024...

I didn't think the (for arguments sake) "newcomers" ever grew out of their scooters or am I thinking of somewhere else where those males in the 30-40s bracket think it perfectly acceptable to "ride" their scooters along pavements, in shops and through other ppls gardens? kNOBS ;-)

"Has anybody noticed how arrogant and self-important people seem to be in East Dulwich, especially on Saturdays? You would've thought they were living in a Royal Borough, or the like."

Has anybody noticed how many people come on here to complain about other people in the most generalised and sweeping terms, especially 'middle class' people and parents?

You would've thought they'd have something better to do.

I don't think you should take a post like this from a '1st time poster' too seriously. He/she hasn't returned since.

People's perception of East Dulwich have changed over the years.

Many years back when I told people I lived in Dulwich they would reply.......

"You don't actually live in Dulwich. You live in East Dulwich."

Now When I say I live in East Dulwich, People reply....

"Do you actually live in East Dulwich proper.?"

Fox..

Born and bred in Peckham. Moved to East Dulwich / South Peckham 1980.

What next..?

Clapham Known as 'Clarm'

Battersea Known as 'Bat Ter Sea'

East Dulwich.. ?? mmmhhm ' Es Dul'

For a joyous trip to Polarity

Try Penge High Street. It is the very antithesis of LSL

Approached from Crystal Palace, passing the Watermen's Almshouses & the wood fired pizza joint it has its charms, but beyond the bookies and the butcher is Checkpoint-Charlie proper.

There's tribes for sure, usually related, tattooed or at least joined by their love of Scratch-cards, Sovereigns & Super-kings.

All bunched round the entrances to Poundland, Greggs & Mc Donalds. Many sporting oversized frames squeezed into oversized sportswear rompers & a scowl of suspicion dare you look too long at their offspring's pierced ears or gelled up mohawks.

Oh yeah, it's great.

"I ain't got nah cred-it "

And if smugness is a window to of self awareness, then you'll find the shutters fully locked down in Penge.

There is of course a saving grace (for some), the road through is an arterial link to that Nirvana of the chosen few.

Clarm and Bat-terse-see-ah have been around for a while as have more desperate attempts like Saint Reatham and Saint Ockwell and indeed L'Ovale.

I suspect the future could be Dulwich ? l'est or Dulwich ? l'est (du village) as there is wine making nearby... and also Dulwich Gauche & Dulwich Orientales.

Personally I'd prefer something with a touch of the Domesday book about it like Dulwich Sinister perhaps?

    • My memory, admittedly not very reliable these days, places the shop on the block on the left hand side just before Burgess Park going towards Camberwell. Have also found a reference to Franklins Antiques being located at 157 Camberwell Road which is on that block. This is a screen shot obtained from Google maps of that address which accords with my memory except the entrance door was on the right hand side, where the grey door is, rather than in the centre.
    • The MFI was probably where Iceland is now. This post makes me feel very old - went to a 30th birthday party in the garden at the back. Oh to be 30 again!
    • Anyone upgraded their TV for Christmas?! I'm looking for a smallish Smart TV I can use with earbuds. Not more than 56cm high and  25cm deep. A 26" one used to fit.  Thanks!
    • It wasn't an antique and bric-a-bac shop but an antique market with a number of different traders, the cafe supported all the dealers in bringing in custom, and was good enough to generate trade for them. It was Rodney Franklin's and his partners enterprise, he previously had an antique shop in Queenstown Road in Battersea. His late wife ran the cafe (she was a very fine actress, it was a 'resting' job).  It was on the corner of a junction on the left as you head towards Camberwell. And almost opposite, if memory serves at all, an MFI style furniture outlet.
