Hi all,

Following some building works at our property we have uncovered a loft with numerous boxes full of fascinating letters. I've become a bit obsessed with finding out who this person was and would love to find any surviving relatives so we can hand them back a piece of their family history. Perhaps some long term ED residents knew of him or his relatives.

His name was George Hill, formerly of 7 Ildersley Road, West Dulwich. It appears that he used to work at the London Metropolitan Water Board on Roseberry Avenue from 1920 until the late 50s and moved to our property on Underhill Road after his house was bombed during the war and whilst it was undergoing repairs.

He had a daughter called Evelyn Margaret Hill, born 7th December 1926 and was at some point married to Ruby Constance Hill. During the 1910s he had a long distance romance with a lady in Germany, although we don't know whether this was Ruby.

It seems like he was a director or owner of the Brixton Roller Rink, which was also bombed during the war, from which he received an annual income.

Does anyone know of a person like this? It's a fascinating story and I'd love to find a way to connect with any descendants.

You could search Ancestry or set up a public family tree with the info you have - they often offer a 14-day free trial to use the site. You might find links that way - including finding them in other family trees or people also researching them - otherwise google searches of names can produce results sometimes.

Or, write an interesting article for one of the local papers?

    • Oh give it a break.  We have an MP who makes racist comments, yet our media (and what seems like this Forum) that generally hate Labour (and loved Johnson) are just out looking for the dirt. It's a move on, nothing to see here.  Particularly if she used a letting agency.

    • I don't think a single all-inclusive URL is easily doable.  When you enter a search the system presents the result without any of one's search parameters added to the URL.  So I suggest you go to https://planning.southwark.gov.uk/online-applications/search.do?action=advanced where you just need to enter the address -- use SE22 8EW -- and the  Date Received start date.  I used 1/1/2025.  The three Tesco applications, all minor things, were all made in May.  The Simple search that I'd done previously had no time limit, and didn't include anything else that might have been from Tesco in the last two years. Incidentally, when I searched on the address 29-35 Lordship Lane it did not pick up the Tesco applications, which were held as 29 - 35 Lordship Lane Grrr!
