Damp / mould surveyor

Hello! Does anybody have a contact who could come round and assess the damp/mould in my flat (and how to get rid of it!)? I had Environ booked in to come this morning but their surveyor has handed in his notice and they don't have anybody else for this area! Any contacts very welcome.

Thanks

The two most likely causes of damp will be (a) water incursion from damaged pipework, including guttering and downpipes and (b) condensation caused by poor ventilation. Where there is damp, mould will likely follow. Creating a sealed environment (draught proofing, double glazing etc.) sadly creates an ideal atmosphere for condensation. [Oh, and having a completely dry atmosphere, should you achieve it, also has health implications]. Condensation forms when warm wet air meets a cold surface - so you often get it on outside walls in kitchens for instance. Insulating cold surfaces (such as cavity wall insulation) may mitigate this. The problem is that the more you seal a space, the less chance the moist air has to go anywhere, so eventually it will precipitate moisture.

Choose an independent surveyor, otherwise the remedy you are offered will be the one he/ she has to sell.

I googled this the other day.

Apparently the "meters" non independent surveyors use to measure damp by holding them against walls aren't measuring damp at all.

However when they go off the scale, they are used to sell a "cure", as Penguin68 says, for a non existent problem (or at least, not the problem supposedly proven).

I would be interested in knowing the outcome. I think I have damp in my house (just going by a smell of damp) but I'm not sure of the cause at present and was considering getting someone in to advise, hence the googling.

    • Niko was recommended to me through a group chat for my road, where everybody raves about him. I soon realised why as he did an amazing job installing an outdoor tap for me. I needed it done quickly but had a hectic schedule, and Niko did everything possible to accommodate this, bringing the parts and working late on a Friday, having worked out the best solution for my maze of pipes. The tap looks great and works amazingly with good pressure. He made minimal mess and cleaned everything up, and charged me a very competitive price. On top of that he is delightful to chat to and willing to give advice on other matters. He’s a lovely man and will be my go-to for any issues in the future! Recommend to anybody in the Dulwich/ Peckham/Camberwell area!!
    • We've used Aria a couple of times - this time a tap that was causing water hammer elsewhere in the house, he replaced it and checked all was well. He was prompt, quick in his work, and charged what he said he would. Will use him again.
    • Hi I found a phone on the pavement near the bus stop half way up lordship lane opposite M&S and have handed into one of the estate agents there (KFH). Please call in there if you have lost it.
