A deal was struck when the East London Line was extended and became one arm of the Overground that Shoreditch High Street would be in Zone 1, hence not a cheap way to get to Liverpool Street and the City, and similarly those going beyond would also get caught. A potential extra grand a year on an Oyster pay as you go during peak hours.

You can avoid this by traveling Overground to Canada Water, Jubilee to Stratford, Overgound to Highbury and Islington. 15 - 20 extra mins plus some hassle changing. The Elizabeth line could cut this down by maybe five mins.

Not sure how the card checker would know you avoided Zone 1 unless you touch in at Stratford.

Does anyone do this? Would anyone do this? Sensible answers if you please.

For those going to Liverpool Street and the City a nice 20 min walk from Whitechapel (zone 2).

Touch the pink card reader at Stratford and the fare will be ?1.70 peak or ?1.50 off peak.

It?s a legitimate and recognised route.

TfL even suggest it if you use their journey planner.

There's a whole load of routes to avoid zone 1 and pink readers at a number of stations, full list here - https://tfl.gov.uk/fares-and-payments/oyster/using-oyster/pink-card-readers

For instance going from Denmark Hill or Peckham Rye to Canary Wharf, use the pink reader at Canada Water; or to, say, Surbiton, the pink reader at Clapham Junction.

Probably not as well publicised as it could be (when they opened the overground line in 2012 there was a blaze of publicity and automated announcements, but I haven't heard anything for years...)

    • Corbyn was unelectable - he got trashed by Boris who was a buffoon. It was a good job too because I would have hated to see Corbyn and his rag-tag bunch of far-left university politics backbenchers try to lead the country through Covid.  It is completely understandable why Starmer and the Labour Party want to purge Momentum from within their ranks and Cllr McAsh has fallen victim of that.

    • Hello.   Thanks Nigel and Hparker 😀   I've got new slots available for new students looking for a piano teacher or guitar teacher.   You could start in the new term beginning September, or I'm also available adhoc-styles through the summer holidays at times.   I teach all ages, in most styles, in lots of different ways according to how you learn/like to learn.   Give me a call or text on 07730 402336.   I have connections to lots of performance opportunities/networks too.   I run regular events /student concerts, and play in bands/perform.   Natalie.
    • So do I, but I think they are in trouble as well.  Anyway, that space wouldn't be big enough.
