For ppl on Barry Rd suffering from noise from the covers outside 142 ( opp Mulberry Close ) and also outside 161 the outcome of my "live chat " with TW just now is that engineers will attend within the next 24 hours and will update me by 7pm Tuesday .

They say they have attended to the 161 three times since April 2018 ( I've certainly reported this one twice ) but that Barry Rd had been resurfaced and the cover on last inspection did not need attention .

I reported the Mulberry Close one to the council recently. They referred it to the Highways agency who tarmaced over it on Wednesday. By Friday the tarmac had completely disintegrated and was strewn all over the road. I have raised it yet again, hopefully they fix it properly this time, I have little confidence that they will.

I saw all the tarmac - is covering (or attempting to cover ) the manhole how a sunken cover is dealt with ? I was imagining something more sophisticated .

I always report to Thames Water ,do they simply inspect and if cover intact but unevenly bedded into the road then refer to Southwark Highways ?

I think it?s meant as a temporary fix. Over the last few months TW periodically leaflet the nearby cars saying they?re about to embark on repairs. What usually then happens is one of their vans parks there for a few hours with little sign of them actually doing anything. They often don?t even leave the van.

I don't understand how the authorities approach fixing the problem of what appears to me to be a manhole that is not level with the road surface .

Or how it's decided whose responsibilty it is .Southwark ,if they maintain the road ? Thames Water if they maintain the cover ?

Southwark@s on line reporting lists Broken covers as an item that can be reported ,suggesting that they take responsibilty for broken/damaged covers .Nothing about noisy ones .

I had a frustrating telephone conversation yesterday which I imagine constituted an update . One of the covers I reported will be "thoroughly investigated " in the next 2 to 5 working days . I had to correct the quoted location and was unable to understand why the caller couldn't discuss the second cover that I had reported at the same time .

I was told that the tarmac work to the cover opposite Mulberry Close had not been instigated by Thames Water .

It all seems hopeless to me ,the cover near 161 Barry Rd has been noisy ( with brief respites ) for 12 months now .

    • I am  ill in bed with Covid. It's not that I "can't be bothered" to read things. I am feeling crap and don't have the mental  energy at the moment. I am not "brushing stuff aside and pleading ignorance." I am truthfully saying when I don't presently know enough about something to be able to comment. I have always been very careful to try to  differentiate between fact and opinion in both  my posts and other people's, and I am not clear what your point is. And I am certainly not trying to wind anybody up. This is a forum. If you don't want to respond to my posts, that's up to you. I'm not sure why you feel the need to announce it.
    • @NewWave I know how you feel. Like you, I've lived and spent prolonged periods of time in some pretty crazy places and always thought I could handle a bunch of kids. But, no - they got to me and I was shaking like a leaf afterwards. That's what age does to us.  But I did engage with them, so bear that in mind.  My advice would be to never let anything like that stop you doing the things you love. I'm certainly not going to stop using the park, there's no way they get to take away our cherished spaces!  If you see them, just change tack and keep out of their way. My dog won't even go that way again, so that's that problem solved. (If I see them again, I'm going to keep taking photos from a safe distance).
    • Truly horrific. Being passive or fighting back is what many of us think about by violent theft.
    • What ridiculous waste of money
