A guy knocked at our door around 9.30am this morning and claimed to be from Thames Water investigating blocked drains at a property a few doors up that is undergoing substantial refurbishment and always has an army of workman buzzing around it.

He was a white guy in hid mis 30's, 5'8 to 5'10 well built, short brown hair and wearing a yellow high vis waistcoat and clutching some dirty tools - one looked like a small garden dibber.

He wanted to come in and look at our drains. I asked for ID and he didn't have any but claimed his Thames Water van was parked up the road.

I told him I still wasn't going to let him in and that actually the drains ran the other way (which if he was legit he should have known).

Have told the police and they going to have a look around for him.

Just to everyone to beware - he was a bit of a comedy workman clutching an odd selection of tools and no ID.

was it bellenden road or an adjoining road? we had two men wanting to go through our house to remove our neighbours back scaffoldilng- neighbours were at work and the guys didnt have their number. Our Neighbours do have back scaffolding but these two were well dodgy.

Hi

Thames water are in the area this week as they are working on Mcdermott Road as I had a letter last week giving me the heads up. Your particular caller may be opportunistic (and sounds like it based on his drain knowledge) but just thought i'd share.

thanks

    • I don't know how it works now but my late parents had little money when they were retired (just state pension and they rented their flat) and they used to take their cat to the Blue Cross (In Victoria if I remember correctly) where treatment was free for those who could'nt afford a private vet. I sincerely hope similar is available still because for many elderly their pet is their main source of comfort and company.
    • In a couple of places locally, I have come across this. I am fairly sure that they attempt to do the bill in their head. If you just say , “no, I think it’s x” they start again and get to an agreeable number, or find a calculator. I don’t think it’s a malicious attempt to swindle people. Just not great arithmetic.
    • There are excellent charities like the Greenwich Wildlife Network who will help if you report any concerns with local wildlife. Foxes are wonderful creatures who had been forced into our town and cities and are just doing their best to survive, we should take care of them when we can.
    • Like I thought… prob like that for most of the day.. especially after people had walked their dogs, with friends, relatives  kids…
