Shop opening on 13th January to be run by The Society For The Protection of Unwanted Objects whose proprietor is James Castle - a collector and careful clearer of houses. The shop will run for SIX WEEKS only. There will be masses of beautiful vintage objects on offer at decent prices for a broad selection of tastes. Retro and antique furniture, fabrics, collectable items, old advertising, tins, old and new art - pictures mostly, art and craft materials and literature, strange old industrial objects, classy cushions, cabinets, luggage - trunks and suitcases, vintage fashion and clothes, old toys, books and so on. Hosted at Le Garage, the Art and Exhibition Space, at 155 Dulwich Road, Herne Hill SE24 0NG. Telephone for more information or details: 07817 538872.
Le Garage? Does everything for sale at Le Garage automatically become un objet and if it were The Garage, would it all just be a heap of junk? Can we solve our current economic problems by renaming everything in French, whiie the French simultaneously rename everything in English?
A reasonable observation from Language Lounger on possible misuse of language. Having given some thought to these comments on French and English, it suddenly occurred to me that of course - Garage IS a French word, not English. I certainly hope that whatever I am selling, whatever language is appropriate for the items and objects, it is not junk. Having said that many antique dealers describe themselves as being in the Junk Trade. Beauty is in the eye of any particular beholder at any particular time and in an era where shabby and chic have married (French and English again) to form the new vogue-ish sub-genre 'shabby chic' (ha ha French and English AGAIN!) of second-hand and vintage and old and classic things and items, it is impossible to control all the people all the time if they are intent on murdering words and sentences in any one language. And so on and so forth plus ca change...........my shop opens tomorrow 13th January at 12 noon. Bonjour. James

    • It was my understanding that Jeremy Corbyn was embarrassed by his brother and had distanced himself from his brother's views. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong. Why on earth should "the overall view of that family inform Jeremy's response to the pandemic"? What exactly are you basing that assumption on?
    • I guess it's best to do what most Brits do these days, keep your head down and say nothing! although that's probably why this country is in the mess it is today!  😞
    • @Dulwichway Absolutely - I'm in no way trying to say that what happened was life-changing. I've encountered way worse situations and think of myself as pretty tough, which is why I took them on and got pelted. I suppose I'm just taken aback because the park always seemed so safe. But the stats I've just posted contradict that.   I suppose the one of the points of this thread is to point out that they weren't just numpty youths - I'd bet money on some of them being involved in more serious criminality. And to tell others to be vigilant.
    • Still, I guess it could be a lot worse than water being thrown at you by these numpty youths during these warmer times? thankfully it wasn't the more dangerous mugging type youths that crossed your path waving knifes and guns in your face!  just a thought? hopefully these muppets will get sorted by plod soon, but don't hold your breath.
