I?m feeling stressed at the thought of organising wrap around care for my daughter who will be starting reception in September. I work in north London and regularly don?t get home til 6:30 or 7pm. That rules out after school club if they finish at 6 or 6:30pm. Other option is childminder but how much do they cost? Would love to hear what other people do. I?m on a budget as I already pay out for nursery fees for my toddler. Husband often back later too and no other family to help. Argh. Thanks in advance

Could you consider nanny-share with another family? That could end up being circa ?6-?7 an hour for the hours beyond the end of the after school clubs (many of which charge by the way).

If you have space in your home, an au pair could also be good choice. True au pairs are really young girls without childcare qualification looking to live abroad and improve their English. They can only work with children over two and typically only 20 hours a week but the total cost would be providing room and board, language lessons and pocket money (?80-100 a week).

Good luck!

I think your best option would be either an au pair or a nanny share. We had a nanny, then had an au pair and are now switching to an after school nanny. Au pairs are around ?100 a week, nannies are generally around ?12 an hour once you?ve figured in tax etc.

    • Well thanks for enriching the conversation.  Would you chuck Fah - rage in too for his tax avoidance on his property?   I expect it was lead story on Jeremy Vine too.  Doesn't make it a story, just a bit more of BBC tabloid style sensationalism.  There are numerous real news stories in the UK and across the world.  And now, apt for Halloween, you have summoned up the ghost of Louisa. So for the third time, will you now eat humble pie?
