Our next meeting is Wednesday 21st September in the Blake room at the Clockhouse.

Dear book group,

There is a strong possibility that Rob Shearman who wrote our last book Love Songs for The Shy & Cynical will come to our September meeting.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rob_Shearman#Fiction_books

Evie Wylde, a local author is going to come to our November meeting if we read her second novel, All The Birds Singing:

https://www.theguardian.com/books/2013/jun/30/evie-wyld-birds-singing-review

Recently Evie was on the radio four book club with James Naughtie, here is a link and you can down load the pod cast:

The above have yet to be confirmed, we can decide a date for November and Evie Wylde on the 21st September.

Till then.

Dear book group,

Good news, Rob Shearman will be coming to our meeting next Wednesday so do please come along.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Shearman#Fiction_books

I suggest we discuss Beloved first then talk to Rob about his book of short stories, writing in general and Dr Who, Rob did some script writing for Dr Who. So it should be an interesting meeting.

I am struggling with Beloved but intend to finish.

Till Wednesday,

Dear book group,

Thanks to everyone who came to a superb meeting last Wednesday. Rob Shearman was great fun, informative and entertaining. It was the funniest meeting we have had.

Our next meeting is 19th October in the Clockhouse again in the snug area. Can you let me know if you prefer the snug and wish to make it permanent?

Our next book is The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd:

Dear Book group,

Many thanks to those of you who came fro our end of year meal, a thoroughly good night.

We have had a good year with three mainstream authors coming to see us, Michel Faber, Rob Shearman and Evie Wylde. We also had a local philosopher come in to lead a discussion on consciousness after we read a book on atoms and where they come from. We are stardust.

Thanks for your continued support. I have benefited from having such a large genre of books to read.

The radio four book club has also been fun and we may well go back next year.

So all the best for Christmas and the new year.

The next meeting is January 18th in the Clockhouse. The book H is for Hawk took a bit of getting into but now I am thoroughly enjoying it.

Greetings book group,

Thanks to every one who came to last Wednesday?s meeting. Also a very good and funny meeting thanks largely to Alice Mc Kain.

And a big welcome to Geof. Our next meeting is on 15th February again in the Clockhouse. Our next book is Arthur & George by Julian Barnes.

Some time in the future I am going to organise a trip to Westminster Abbey. Loads of famous scientist?s are entombed there: Newton, James Clerk Maxwell, Faraday.

Also we will be having another meal this time at Bahn Bahn because it?s so good.

My preference for both is a Saturday, can I have some feed back on this please.

    • For every person like OP that moans their doorbell was rung and there was a knock on the door, there's someone else moaning that they didn't hear the delivery drivers. If you've ever done delivery work you'll know that loads of people's bells don't work. The delivery drivers probably goes to a hundred doors a day: press bell, knock door, drop package, move on. If you don't like delivery drivers, insist on delivery by Royal Mail where the workers have wages and a union - or just stop ordering shit online that's artificially cheap. But most of us (me included) don't want that
    • If someone comes to my house and bangs my door and slams my gate, I'd speak to them about it nicely and ask if they would please not do that. And then subsequently less nicely if they keep doing it, ending in reporting them.  We don't slam doors at home and I don't put up with that either. I can see us moving to a culture where we bribe drivers to be nice by tipping them, but we shouldn't have to. It's not necessary - does not matter if they are on minimum wage or not, or if society means that delivery services are outsourced or whatever reason anyone would like to concoct.
    • We’ve got a gap on the roof of our shed that needs patching  don’t want to buy a huge roll so hoping someone has some leftover  happy to collect/reimburse
    • I never said I thought it was targeted or deliberate. There also has never been a “stand off” or confrontation, we’ve spoken to them in a friendly manner about it. Our experience is they don’t seem to care. That’s the frustrating thing for us, if someone politely raises a concern at least take a second to reflect. Treat others how you would want to be treated.  I don’t want them to lose their job, far from it. But considering it could cost me a days work to fix any damage, I’m within my right to try prevent it.
