Dear book group,

Some time next year I am going to propose we read a book called The Magic Furnace by Marcus Chown. It?s a story of how scientists? discovered the origin of our atoms.

A brief description:

Every atom in our bodies has an extraordinary history. Our blood, our food, our books, our clothes ? everything contains atoms forged in blistering furnaces deep inside stars, which were blown into space by those stars? cataclysmic explosions and deaths. From red giants ? stars so enormous they could engulf a million suns ? to supernova explosions ? the most violent events in the universe ? the birth of every atom was marked by cosmic events on an enormous scale, against a backdrop of unimaginable heat and cold, brightness and darkness, space and time. But how did we discover the astonishing truth about our cosmic origins? The Magic Furnace is Marcus Chown?s extraordinary account of how scientists unravelled the mystery of atoms, and helped to explain the dawn of life. It is one of the greatest detective stories in the history of science. In fact, it is two puzzles intertwined, for the stars contain the key to unlocking the secret of atoms, and the atoms the solution to the secret of stars.

Having convinced our self?s that we are made the same stuff as stars and rocks I propose inviting a local philosopher to lead a discussion on the book and on consciousness and why we have it, where it comes from and why rocks don?t.

This wont suit everyone so we will choose another book more aligned to our usual books that can be read in parallel.

Also some time maybe before Christmas I am going to propose a trip to the Science museum to go to this exhibition:

http://www.sciencemuseum.org.uk/visitmuseum/Plan_your_visit/exhibitions/cosmonauts.aspx

So please let me know your thoughts on the above. See you on the 12th.

Our next meeting is on Wednesday 18th November at 8.00pm in the Clockhouse. Probably in the Blake Room but I will confirm this later.

Our next book is All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doer.

I look forward to seeing you.

Dear book group,

I wish to suggest that for the November book we read Michel Faber's latest book The Book of Strange New Things which is in paper back now.

If possible he will come down from Scotland for our January meeting which will be on Wednesday 20th. It's a big book so as usual I wont suggest a book for December as I think we will need 2 months to read this one. See below.

http://www.theguardian.com/books/2014/oct/26/book-of-strange-new-things-michel-faber-review

I would also like to set Wednesday 9th December for our end of year meal. We had Thai last year and can I have your suggestions for this year, preferably in Lordship Lane.

Please let me know your thoughts.

All the best,

Chick

From Michel:

> Is there any possibility that you will be in London mid or late January?

Nothing is planned for January and I am trying to keep my head down & work on the Eva stories after my travel excesses earlier this year. But if your book group are definitely going to be doing the book, I would try to come down for that regardless. At the very least, if I found that it was just impossible to make it down, I would render myself available for that evening to any emails that anyone in the group wanted to fire off to me on the spot, and I would answer them within minutes. But if possible I would try to actually be there. Please let me know the exact date as soon as you know it yourself.

    • Where did I say he did a good job? Yup and Corbyn was very close to Len McCluskey and funded by Unite wasn't he...they're all as bad as each other... Labour have to purge their party of the far-left - they're a disaster. Allan Johnson summed it up so well on election night in 2019....
    • Thank you for the detailed advise @trinidad It is definitely damage we are concerned about. I don’t think Evri would agree to pay the bill to fix our gate or letter box if they were to be damaged as a result of their delivery drivers helper. Our doorbell can be heard from outside when rung so we don’t quite believe the aggressive simultaneous door/letter box banging is necessary. It can be quite a shock it is done very aggressively.  I’ll definitely action the steps you’ve kindly provided along with a phone call tomorrow. I do sympathise with the role drivers have and how busy they are, which is why we tried communicating directly with her but sadly we haven’t succeeded
    • What outcome would you like? Disciplinary action? Not to have the driver back? Retraining? I know there is alot of pressure on drivers to deliver within a set day. if he slams the gate, is it evidence he is causing damage, or is the noise a irritant to yourself? You could put a sign up or buy a signing asking to close the gate gentle???? can you hear the door bell from the door? he might be ringing, not hearing and therefore knocking. In trhe notes section of the be livery page, there is a note section, although there is not 100 per cent these notes would be read as these drivers are constantly rushing.  I did a google search for you, i found this and you can try the envri website Contact Us | Evri   To complain to Evri, you can follow these steps: Contact Customer Service: Call Evri's customer service at 0330 808 5456 for assistance with your complaint.    1 Write a Letter: Address your complaint to Capitol House, 1 Capitol Close, Morley, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS27 0WH.    1 Use the Official Website: Visit the Evri complaints page on their official website for detailed instructions on how to submit a complaint.    2 Email or Call for Specific Issues: For issues like missing or damaged parcels, you can email or call 0800 988 8888, which is free to call.    1 These methods will help you effectively communicate your concerns to Evri.   My driver is called anthony, he is brilliant to be honest. I cant fault him.
    • When I have more time and energy, I will look up the actual number of votes cast for each party in that election, rather than the number of seats won. I'm interested to see that you apparently  think that  Boris Johnson did a good job of "leading the country through Covid." Is your memory really that short? I won't stoop to calling Johnson and his cronies names in the way that you seem to think is appropriate for left wing politicians. At least the left wing politicians have some semblance of morals and a concern for people who aren't in some over privileged inner circle and/or raking in money for themselves on the back of an epidemic. I'm not going to open a can of worms on here  by commenting on the disgraceful so called "purge".
