We would like to go to Sweden this summer for our hols. Can anyone recommend a self catering cottage to rent, or a holiday company contact? We would like to be either near Stockholm or Gothenburg, preferably near water. We have found a few contacts online, but would prefer a recommendation if poss! Many thanks!

Hi MrsP,

I am Swedish and happy to help, send me a PM with some info and I will gladly give you some tips depending on what sort of holiday you have in mind and what your priorities are. I am from Gothenburg so slightly biased but will try and be fair :).

I don't have any specific contacts or recommendations but both the Stockholm Archipelago and west coast is stunning. I'm from Stockholm so happy to offer hints and tips on that area if you pm me

with more details. Stockholmtown.com is a good place to start. If your kids aren't too young you coul perhaps go islan hopping in the archipelago? There are lots of nice hostels dotted around.

Another vote for Gothenburg, my partner lived there for a couple of years and when we met I visited him there alternate weekends.

The city is great and the islands are beautiful, lots of lovely cottages. Hiring a Stuge is very traditional and good fun, although we only ever went for one with full facilities!

I only visited Stockholm once, preferred Gothenburg but Stockholm was nice too.

If you decide to go to Gothenburg I can ask my partner for recommendations, also we still have swedish friends there.

Great choice of destination, not sure when your planning to go but Midsommer is a huge celebration :)

Went last year for a wedding. Nice, but very, very, very expensive! Can recommend an accommodation company called "cocoon". We stayed in a family flat in central stockholm, v convenient and got everywhere on foot and boat.

It's impossible to buy booze, they sell it through state shops of which there aren't many and they close at 6pm. Oh, and lots of flats said there was a washing machine but turned out there was a shared one in thr basement for the whole building, and you had to book timeslots, I nearly had nervous breakdown about being parted from my laundry-woman life!

    • The Commons Public Accounts Committee questioned both the CEO and MD of Capita yesterday, at their last meeting before the recess:  https://committees.parliament.uk/event/25889/formal-meeting-oral-evidence-session/.  In October they'd already expressed concern that Capita might not  be able to efficiently retake over responsibility for the administration within the timescale. Given the joint statement recently issued by Capita and the Cabinet Office I'm not sure that contacting an MP is going to add much, other than venting what I think most of us can probably appreciate of what those affected are likely  to be thinking and feeling; unless perhaps, and I hope it's not needed, to report on deficiencies in the immediate rescue actions.

    • Two for Ratcliffe, the obvious one:   And one simply because it has the word  "You are nothing but blind fascists" in it.  Oh and a good song too.   Haven't listened to this for years.  Bloody good!
    • It's time to ditch your team, otherwise you could be seen to supporting your owners dog whistle comments (aka racist). Fortunately you can support a local team, I understand that Palace have pretty right on fans, and you have Dulwich Hamlet and Peckham Town too. If you genuinely are from the North West then Everton fans are well rated for their politics (ignore the paving over paradise/loss of UNESCO world heritage status), and of course FC United of Manchester. Salford Town not a bad bet either. For those who are glory hunters dare I say over the river in the North London library aka Emirates (shame they don't rhyme) you have both the likelihood of a title this season and a very multicultural fan base. If you want to be really cool the Welsh speaking team Club Cymric, Forest Green Rovers, or AS Livorno in Italy, an anti-fascist team
