Secret Histories: Damian Barr with Sarah Perry

19.00 Wednesday 3rd April 2019

Inspired by real events, You Will Be Safe Here uncovers a hidden colonial history and present-day darkness while exploring our capacity for cruelty and kindness. This is the debut novel from Damian Barr, whose awarding-winning memoir, Maggie & Me, was about coming of age and coming out in Thatcher?s Britain. He is the creator and host of the marvellous Literary Salon.

We are thrilled that Damian will be with us on the evening before the publication day of You Will Be Safe Here. He will be talking about his novel with Sarah Perry, author of Dulwich Books favourites, The Essex Serpent and Melmoth. Both You Will Safe Here and Melmoth consider the links between hidden legacies of history and the present. Don?t miss what is sure to be a fantastic discussion about this wonderful debut novel and about how fiction can be used to illuminate the past.

The event will start promptly at 19.00 and finish by 20.30

Location: Dulwich Books, 6 Croxted Rd, Dulwich, SE21 8SW

    • That explanation sounds highly unlikely!  Surely the "days of the week" plates must be a standard size. I know Royal Mail often appears incompetent, but it  couldn't be that stupid, surely. Was it 1 April?!
    • Looking for a short length of electric (twin & earth)  lighting cable. Most likely there could be some in a skip near you??
    • Southwark's recycling guidance says to put shredded paper in the blue bin in a paper envelope or "small box". I've got far too much of it for that  (confidential stuff going back decades) - thanks to the EDF member who kindly gave me a shredder! It would be a "massive box". I have barely started  the shredding, and I've already got an extremely large bagful.   I've read online that you can put it into  large clear plastic bags in the bin for paper,  provided you  clearly label it "shredded paper" and it is obvious what it is. Does anybody know if Southwark would accept it like that? Alternatively, can anyone make use of it for animal bedding or packaging material or adding to  compost?
    • I'm happy to report that some foxgloves are now looking great in my garden. The bees are loving them. Also managed to grow some corn poppies from seed. I've left some decaying logs in the corner so maybe there are some stag beetles there.
