Gas renewal Rye Lane

After wondering why buses were still not running down Rye Lane after most of the works have been completed, the P13 in particular, this was the answer from TFL.

It appears that it is Southwark who are keeping the road closed. If cars can use the road why not public transport?

If the bus routes are clear why are they not opened for public use.

Thank you for your email of 17 April about the diversion of the P13. I trust the following information helps.

As you know, the gas renewals have been completed past the junction of Blenheim Grove. However, we cannot return buses to the normal line of route at present. The local authority is taking the opportunity to get all upcoming utility works and building development works done on Rye Lane while the closure is in place. This is to avoid closing the road again.

I am surprised that the P13 route cannot be opened as cars are using that route with no problem.

At the moment is is causing problems for residents who need the bus to get to Rye Lane.

Open the route until needed then close it.

Knowing how Southwark works this could go on for months or years.

At the public meeting to discuss this, I asked if all utilities and building works would take the opportunity of the road being closed, and the answer was yes. So maybe more works have to be done within the 63 week schedule. It would truly annoy everyone if say the P13 used the route for 3 weeks and then was not allowed to do so for another 2 months whilst more planned work went ahead. Imagining the whinging! Anyway, let's hope that all the works are done ahead of schedule. It was the gas company SGS who asked Southwark for a long time to be allowed to do this work. SGS said there had been 81 gas leaks since 2011 if memory serves, and finally Southwark gave in and agreed on the year long closure of Rye lane. It is my opinion (not related to any party in any way) that we need to let things go through their course and hope that all works are indeed completed by all interested parties before the road is allowed to fully open.

I feel sorry for the traders along Rye Land who presumably are suffering financially with the much reduced footfall.

Good news. According to Southwark News, Rye Lane will reopen by June 8th. The works have finished months ahead of schedule.

"Rye Lane should be open to traffic by Saturday, June 8, after gas engineering work was completed months ahead of schedule.

Gas company SGN said the mains work that led the Peckham road?s closure since the beginning of January had been completed and its team were now reinstating the road.

Pipes in better condition than expected and new techniques all helped speed up the replacement work originally planned until January 2020.

Currently Rye Lane is closed to cars, buses and cyclists between Hanover Park and Sternhall Lane with a diversion via Hanover Park and Consort Road, and temporary traffic lights in place near Copeland Road.

SGN general manager, Drew Reynolds, said: ?We?re pleased to announce that we?ve completed the final engineering work ahead of schedule and we?ll be able to safely reopen Rye Lane to motorists and public transport after a period of reinstatement.

?We?d like to thank residents, traders, shoppers and road users for their continued patience and understanding while we?ve carried out this essential work to ensure the Peckham community can enjoy the benefits of a safe and reliable gas supply for many years to come.""

Let's hope TfL get the message and reinstate the buses currently on diversion.

That is good news. I hope that when it reopens more work will be able to be done on the station and on Khan's. When is the revamp actually meant to take (have taken?) place?

They're doing the internal work now apparently (that's the buildings that the leaseholders have moved out from).

Don't think the whole thing completes until Autumn 2021 - and usually those deadlines get extended.
