social cycle ride Saturday May 18th starts 9.30am

Recommended Posts

This is one of the longer rides but still just as slow-paced and easy-going. It starts at 9.30am at the Cutty Sark near the entrance to the Greenwich foot tunnel and heads south to Danson Park, Bexley. It's a round trip so riders will be back at the Cutty Sark at 1pm having covered about 19 miles.

The route includes lots of cycle path and quiet streets, but there will be some moderately busy roads as well. A pic of the route map is attached. The group will go through Greenwich Park (where pushing will be allowed), and across Blackheath to Kidbrooke. There riders will pick up Quietway 1 and follow this past Well Hall Pleasaunce, along Rochester Way to Falconwood.

Then they leave Quietway 1 and continue parallel to Rochester Way pretty much to Danson Park. There will be a coffee stop at Old Stables and then back via Welling High St, then turning south to Plumstead High St and down to last section of the Ridgeway and through to Woolwich waterfront. Finish along Thames path back to Cutty Sark.

These rides are free and everyone is welcome. They are arranged by Bruce Lynn and friends on behalf Southwark Cyclists who are the borough branchvof the London Cycling Campaign. The LCC campaigns for enjoyable, safer cycling in London and these rides are our way of showing that cycling can be pleasurable and doesn't need to involve lots of sports kit and confrontations with lorries.

To keep in touch with us follow @southwarkcycle, find out more about the rides here: https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk and you can contact Bruce on 07729 279 945. Free and welcoming, enjoy.

    • Hello! We are relocating abroad and so will be withdrawing our two children (ages 4 and 6) from St Dunstan’s College (Catford). If any family is considering enrolling children of a similar age, now would be an excellent opportunity—we’re required to pay full‑term fees unless the places are taken. Please get in touch if you’re interested or know someone who might be. Thank you!

    • Thanks for your reply. I’ve subscribed to Ancestry a few times in the past but felt I wasn’t using it enough to warrant keeping up the subscription.
    • Hi, I saw your post and just wanted to say that the incident you’re referring to did happen in the late 1980s at Dawson’s Heights. The person involved was named Carl Salawa, and he had just turned 18 years old at the time. Like you, I haven’t been able to find any news articles or official reports about it, If anyone remembers anything more about that time or incident, I’d really appreciate hearing about it. Thanks for sharing what you were told—it means a lot to know others remember.
