Bank Holiday special: cycle ride to Ally Pally May27th

Recommended Posts

This one starts at 10am from the Southwark Needle (what is that I hear you cry -- see pic attached, I reply) which is at the south end of London Bridge. Easy walk-on train service from East Dulwich all the way to London Bridge station.

It's a Bank Holiday Special ride to Alexandra Palace and back, using a different route each way for a total of 21 miles in five hours. The ride north roughly follows the course of the New River as it comes south to join the Thames. It can't be entirely flat but the incline is definitly shallow. However that changes as the route travels north. At Alexandra Palace Station, the group will leave the river and climb to the Palace. Their reward: a view down upon London (and lunch at the Boating Lake Caf?).

The return route runs a bit to the west of the outward route and includes the Parkland Walk, a green path along disused railway to Finsbury Park (info at https://underground-history.co.uk/northernh.php). It's a delightful, nearly 2 miles of off-road path. They will pass the Emirates Stadium, and then cycle through Barnsbury and Legal London to jjoin the East-West Superhighway (CS3) at Temple Avenue. From there to the Monument and across London Bridge to finish.

The hope is to finish around 3pm. The pace will be easy with plenty of stops as we will be going at our usual rather easy pace with plenty of stops at points of interest. The route was worked out by Werner who will be leading. Route map here http://taffimai.w2.org.uk/healthy-rides/NorthernHeights-20190505.html

these rides are organised and led by Bruce Lynn and friends on behalf of Southwark Cyclists. We are the Southwark branch of the London Cycling Campaign. Everything we do is free and open to all. • A bit of a long shot but I'm on the lookout for a portable pop-up counter or podium.   The kind you often see on a high street, used by charities or utility companies to advertise their wares.   I've included a photo to give you the idea. I'm a peckham-based artist and am looking for one for a free (and non-profit) community art project.  It can be in any workable condition and can already have signage on it as we will remove and redecorate ourselves.    Thanks in advance, Linzie
    • No I absolutely did not - that much is clear. Have you read the latest stories about Unite, Len and the hotel in Birmingham? The UK electorate were smart enough to reject a far-left party in 2019, let's hope they are smart enough to reject a far-right party at the next election too. If not we are all doomed.
    • I would also like to add my recommendation for James.  I had taken four names of electricians from the forum - in the order I had read the reviews.  First three no response - even days later. I phoned James this morning. He answered, gave me a time, stuck to it, messaged again 15 mins before arrival.  He fixed my problem on the spot.  Sensible charge out fee. Perfect service.
    • Most recent polls for the next election suggest it will be a hung parliament, with Reform the largest party by a fair margin. But that is predicated on Reform finding around 300 candidates who are actually electable. Given the number of Reform council candidates who have had to drop out prior to or after the local elections, does that seem likely? Social media is pretty unforgiving when it comes to finding skeletons in cupboards; a retweet or a like seems enough to scupper political ambitions. A few may defect from other parties, but do you think the electorate would really vote for so many brand new MPs from a newish party?  I'm not so sure.
