Bank Holiday special: cycle ride to Ally Pally May27th

Recommended Posts

This one starts at 10am from the Southwark Needle (what is that I hear you cry -- see pic attached, I reply) which is at the south end of London Bridge. Easy walk-on train service from East Dulwich all the way to London Bridge station.

It's a Bank Holiday Special ride to Alexandra Palace and back, using a different route each way for a total of 21 miles in five hours. The ride north roughly follows the course of the New River as it comes south to join the Thames. It can't be entirely flat but the incline is definitly shallow. However that changes as the route travels north. At Alexandra Palace Station, the group will leave the river and climb to the Palace. Their reward: a view down upon London (and lunch at the Boating Lake Caf?).

The return route runs a bit to the west of the outward route and includes the Parkland Walk, a green path along disused railway to Finsbury Park (info at https://underground-history.co.uk/northernh.php). It's a delightful, nearly 2 miles of off-road path. They will pass the Emirates Stadium, and then cycle through Barnsbury and Legal London to jjoin the East-West Superhighway (CS3) at Temple Avenue. From there to the Monument and across London Bridge to finish.

The hope is to finish around 3pm. The pace will be easy with plenty of stops as we will be going at our usual rather easy pace with plenty of stops at points of interest. The route was worked out by Werner who will be leading. Route map here http://taffimai.w2.org.uk/healthy-rides/NorthernHeights-20190505.html

these rides are organised and led by Bruce Lynn and friends on behalf of Southwark Cyclists. We are the Southwark branch of the London Cycling Campaign. Everything we do is free and open to all. • No one is arguing that people should cycle without lights or reflectors. Obviously they should. It is also a legal requirement. But the colour of someone’s clothing? Is it ok to wear navy? What about green? What shade? At what point should we have ‘no reason for sympathy’ if they’re in a collision? I don’t want people to feel like they need special clothes just to walk or cycle. If you have lights and reflectors and you’re on well lit city streets, there is no reason why drivers shouldn’t be able to see you, assuming of course, that they're driving with due care and attention. But yes, if there are lots of people without lights, that should be addressed. I suspect in part, it's the change over in seasons and the fact that people are getting caught out by how early it's getting dark now (obviously no excuse).

    • What a passionate thread this is. I have worked in cycling for years, am a cyclist, a driver, use public transport etc. Driving last night with my two young kids, who also cycle, we made the same observations. It was the kids who first asked me why are most cyclists wearing full black and no lights. We then played a game who can spot all the cyclists, and count those with lights and those without. This teaches them to look out for them but also not to put themselves in a position where we have to strain to find them.
