I've been with Plusnet for a while and generally it has been fine.

However this morning I could not get online for a couple of hours (was slightly panicking as I have a ticket list to print out .....) I could not diagnose what was wrong as the wireless signal was apparently fine blah blah. Turned laptop off and on, turned modem off and on, all seemed OK except I could not get online.

When I finally managed to connect (phew), imagine my surprise to find that my latest email was from Plusnet advertising something called Plusnet Assist (never heard of it before)

In their words, this is "Simple, straightforward software that will give you a helping hand if you ever have trouble with your broadband or wireless connection.

If you've not yet downloaded Plusnet Assist to your PC or laptop why not give it a try today? It's completely free to download and use as part of your service."

Is this just a bizarre coincidence?

Am I being paranoid in thinking Plusnet caused problems with my connection this morning so I would download their new software? (It's free, so why would they?)

Did anybody else have connection problems this morning?

If it's free what would they stand to gain?

I think it's a wee bit paranoid - but not beyond the bounds of possibility.

More likely that the other people downloading the software exceeded Plusnet's retail bandwidth limitations, and their offer brought the system to its knees by accident!

Odds of that being the case are significantly higher.

Thanks very much, that's useful as I was worried it was something wrong at my end, though I couldn't see what.

Thank goodness I am not still affected (selfishly) as I thought I'd have to trek up to the library!

The email was a bit of an unfortunate coincidence for Plusnet then, I guess :))

Hi Sue,

> Is this just a bizarre coincidence?

Yep, as others have alluded to it was complete coincidence.

There was a nationwide BT service outage on the morning in question that affected multiple ISPs. We posted a number of announcements about it, the first of which can be seen here.

If you're interested in receiving these updates then you could do worse than to subscribe to them via email or RSS. Alternatively you can check the Service Status pages on the main Plusnet website or follow us on Twitter.

Anyways, sorry about the downtime and I hope you managed to get that ticket list printed in the end.

Best regards,

Thanks for this Bob, and I appreciate your posting here, but the problem is, if my internet connection is down I cannot receive your announcements etc :)

I don't have a smart phone - and can't afford to get one till my existing contract runs out.

ETA: Of course you're not violating any forum rules (as far as I know) and don't let people put you off continuing to be helpful.

True, however it would have saved the subsequent confusion when you did manage to get back online ;)

    • What is your beef with me ? Why are you asking rhetorical questions?  fighting me but excusing reform? have a look in the mirror  you’ve lost your way
    • I don't need you to tell me to 'fight against' racism.  I know what it looks it like, thank you.  And China would be our enemy whether we were in Europe or not (and has been for a long time), so that's immaterial.  I remember covering an EDL march 12 years ago, when there was a Cons-Lib Dem coalition, so the idea that this is a new problem is rubbish. BUT Reform is doing an excellent job of galvanising a minority in reaction to smug liberals like you, who blame the electorate's collective ignorance for all the country's demons.  What right have you for a moral mandate?
    • Both Labour and Conservatives can remove the threat of a Reform government by making making two major policy promises. And these are .......... (1) categorically state that they will take Britain out of the ECHR and (2) Undertake to remove any new small boat arrivals to Rwanda or wherever else. Reform is basically a single issue party and adopting (1) & (2) would send Reform into obscurity. The country has had enough of our judiciary making a gold-plated interpretation of the ECHR statutes.
    • You fight against by not pretending. By calling it what it is. Instead of slyly pretending they are not racist “actually”  recognise what the country is facing and say “no” why do you even need to ask the question?
