Exploring Engineering cycle ride Sunday June 23rd

Recommended Posts

This special Exploring Engineering ride is being run in conjunction with the Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE) as part of their Explore Engineering weekend. The idea is to showcase the legacy of civil engineering greats such as Brunel, Telford and Bazalgette and this ride was inspired by Southwark Cyclists' Bazalgette 200 rides earlier in the year.

Like all our rides this one is free but unlike them it is bookable. It's part of two days of engineering exploration. You can book this one here: https://www.ice.org.uk/events/explore-engineering-east-london-cycle-tour-london

The ride will start at 10 am at the Southwark Gateway Needle (south side of London Bridge)(see pic) and should finish in the same place before 1pm. It's just 10 miles long but time has been allowed for several stops. The outward leg goes up Cycle Superhighway 2 directly to Abbey Mills Pumping station (a Bazalgette project) and then returns via Three Mills and Bow Locks on river Lea, Limehouse Cut, Limehouse Basin, Wapping Hydraulic Power Station, Wapping station (Brunel?s Thames Tunnel), St Katherines Dock (designed by Thomas Telford)and Tower Bridge.

The ride is organised by Southwark Cyclists in co-operation with the Institute of Civil Engineers. Like everything we do it's free and open to all. Our website is here: https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk. We are part of the London Cycling Campaign which campaigns for safe and enjoyable cycling all over London.

    • Useful link, thanks. I see that neither of the Dulwich Hill councillors are standing again but one of the new Labour candidates for DH recently left the Lib Dems… The Greens are led by someone who left the Lib Dems and full of people who left Labour. Reform is full of those who left the Tories. And the Tories are full of those who left our planet some time ago. Confused? You will be!
    • I'm sorry to learn that though Liam does seems well qualified. Hopefully with McAsh gone, Southwark Labour will turn to Charlie to fill the gap.
    • As I understand it Charlie Smith did put himself forward for selection in GG but Labour members chose someone else to represent them, Liam McGrath https://southwarklabour.com/our-candidates/   It'll be interesting to see if there are other defections - surely the Greens want a drip, drip, drip of news from now to May suggesting the momentum is with them.
    • Thanks for your feedback - we always appreciate hearing from members about their experience. The pool temperature at JAGS Sports Club is maintained at 29oC, in line with industry guidelines for mixed-use pools.  This temperature has been designed to balance comfort for lane swimmers and families. Air temperature is also monitored regularly to ensure a comfortable environment for swimmers, spectators and staff. The shower Temperature Mixing Valves (TMVs) were changed in December to improve consistency, and we hope this has made a noticeable difference. If you would like to discuss your experience in more detail, please contact us directly at [email protected] or 020 8613 6500 and we'll be really happy to help.
