Lectures are held in the Sixth Form Lecture Theatre, James Allen's Girls' School (off Greendale, London SE22 8TX) at 7.30 for 8.00pm.

JAMES TISSOT'S WOMEN

Lecturer: Kathy McLauchlan

This lecture considers Tissot?s importance as an artist recording the lifestyle of the people around him, women above all. During the late 19th century, fashionable young women were frequently depicted as emblems of modern society, seeming to encapsulate the glamour and elegance of the urban scene. Tissot, along with painters like Manet and Renoir, made the portrayal of women a focus for his work, and unlike his Impressionist contemporaries, he achieved popular acclaim. Where the Impressionists challenged contemporary taste, Tissot was celebrated for works whose glossy finish and tasteful elegance seemed a perfect match for his subjects.

- Does anyone remember an incident from the late 90s/early 00s in which a young man fell to death from Dawsons Heights?

  Hi, I saw your post and just wanted to say that the incident you’re referring to did happen in the late 1980s at Dawson’s Heights. The person involved was named Carl Salawa, and he had just turned 18 years old at the time. Like you, I haven’t been able to find any news articles or official reports about it, If anyone remembers anything more about that time or incident, I’d really appreciate hearing about it. Thanks for sharing what you were told—it means a lot to know others remember.

  Was anyone else disturbed last night/early hours this morning by the party going on in someone’s garden on Crystal Palace road. Can’t see what house exactly but it’s around number 43 - 41… it was happening quite frequently last year. Seems it’s starting again! Very inconsiderate.
