I love Swanage and went there loads as a kid.

Not sure what the usual recommendations would be?

Cliff walk to Worth Matravers is good but I guess you already know that ... Nice little pub there which often has live music. Ale and pies and a tiny museum at the back.

Corfe castle. You can get a steam train from Swanage to Corfe (and back). It's fun and the people who run it are lovely.

Weymouth (prejudiced as my mum was from Weymouth). Lovely beach and harbour.

Lulworth Cove (but gets very crowded). Durdle Door, just a short walk from Lulworth Cove.

Will think of more in the morning:)

Swannery at Abbotsbury is wonderful but can't remember how near it is to Swanage.

Upwey Wishing Well ditto. Fantastic gardens and a lovely little tea room.

Maiden castle well known but always fabulous for a walk esp early morning/evening (also great for a run). If you?re feeling adventurous there?s a barrow in a nearby field...

The blue pool near wareham

Preston beach east of Weymouth for a swim away from the Weymouth crowds or swim off the Nothe?

Walk to Durlston Castle from Swanage near the pier. It?s about a twenty minutes or so scenic walk. You get to see Tilly Whim caves, The Globe, Castle and bay. It?s stunning. https://www.durlston.co.uk/

We also got an open top bus from outside Swanage Train Station and you get to go on the car ferry and take in views from Sandbanks, Studlands, Poole and Bournemouth.

We also took a boat from Swanage Pier to Poole, got to see Old Harry?s Rock and lots of activities on water.

Durdle Door is a must but wear proper walking boots as the incline going up and down to Durdle Door is a bit of a killer on the legs/feet.

  • 1 month later...

This is probably too late, but the ferry between Studland and Poole is closed.

It needs a spare part which will take 23 weeks to arrive, according to Swanage information centre.

Oh, and the best fish and chips are at the appallingly named The Fish Plaice, almost opposite the Ship Inn.

Enormous pieces of delicious fish, crispy chips, friendly service, and they tell you the name of the boat it was caught in :)

Indeed it is, but apparently that's the case, and the lack of the ferry is causing massive inconvenience to many people :(

Plus presumably the ferry people have no work :(

    • Really? Yes you are probably right as I know from personal experience with Guys… as I claiming travel costs back, that no one told me I could claim! Left hand does not know what right hand is doing regarding admin..  If they charged people for wasting overstretched staff in A& E as in not urgent just might deter people from wasting precious time…. But then you need interpreters, to explain if language is a barrier and admin staff to administer..  Correct me if I am wrong but is there not a train from Denmark Hill or East Dulwich which goes to London Bridge? Would be faster than 2 buses I would have thought.    Oh, forgot about Tessa Jowell but thought you needed GP referral in which case, that would be the place to go rather than a bigger hospital. Know there is one in Beckenham and you can call and they will give you an idea as to wait time…..same I hope at TJ…assuming they answer phone.. If one really things about it…too many  people in London for example and to few hospitals…
    • I don’t think it’s licensed for Sundays. It is licences for Fridays, but there hasn’t been anyone there on a Friday for years. So I doubt it. i think there’s a market at the Horniman on Sundays. Also pretty sure there’s one outside Herve Hill station on a Sunday.
    • I believe there is a minor injuries department at Guys, though I may have misremembered. Not very convenient for SE22 now the 40 no longer goes near. You have to get 2 buses or a train. Charging people (not sure if you mean financially or legally) would waste a lot more time, I would have thought? And  a bad bruise could be serious, depending on the cause and possibly other symptoms.
