Big Butterfly Count 10-12 Saturday July 27th

Recommended Posts

it's the count which is big not the butterflies https://www.bigbutterflycount.org/ although one can but hope. The ride starts and finishes in Peckham Square (Peckham Library, Peckham Pulse Leisure Centre, SE15 5JR). Does Southwark have butterflies? It does, mostly in the parks and that's where this bike ride goes to look for them. Everyone welcome, especially juvenile lepidopterists who can count.

It's the usual easy-paced ride two-hour ride on mostly quiet streets and paths. The first stop will be in Peckham Rye Park, then across to Ruskin Park via the Greenway. Then Elam Street Open Space, Myatts Field, Kennington Park, Walworth Garden Farm and Burgess Park. There's more information about the count on their website (see first line)and the route map is here:

These rides are organised and run by Bruce Lynn and friends on behalf of Southwark Cyclists which is the borough branch of the London Cycling Campaign. Our website is here: https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk and there are lots of family things on it at the moment including the Freecycle on August 3rd https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/events/freecycle-ride-to-central-london-2/ . Cycle Confident are running free children's cycle courses in Burgess Park and Dulwich Park (details here https://www.cycleconfident.com/sponsors/southwark/). To get in touch with Bruce about the rides text Bruce on 07729 279 945. About anything else try @southwarkcycle.

    • Charity shops have really good board books, especially St Christopher's
    • It was indeed in the vicinity of DKH. I live on the ED estate and I could tell it must be close by because of the noise. When I left my house this morning I found the culprits litter still in the middle of the st. It looked like they had lit a whole box on fire in the middle of the road. My cat jumped out of her skin. I’ll try and report it on Southwark website same as I have had to with other illegal use this week. Any other ideas for what we can do with the photos? Maybe one of the Southwark councillors. It’s outrageous and dangerous behaviour.
    • Had another great meal there…. those that haven’t tried it, give it a go.. have a special lunch menu as well so you can get a flavour of the food.
    • If you "cotton on" and read the council announcement, it clearly states "The library will be closed from 17 November until late June or early July 2026."  https://www.southwark.gov.uk/2025/dulwich-library-closing-refurbishment
