Hello all,

I will be travelling to Sri Lanka in exactly two weeks - looking forward to it! I haven't really had time to plan my trip yet, so if you have any suggestions on places to see or to avoid, things to do, food to try or anything else you can think of I will be very grateful. I'll be there for 17 days and there will be 2 of us - girls in our late 20's.

We're flying to Colombo and then I think we might have to head north-east as the weather should be better (drier) there.

Many many many thanks!

Erika

Sigariya, Kandy and it's temple (of the tooth ?), the Buddhist temples in caves near the village beginning with 'B'.

I would have mentioned Hikkaduwa, Unawatuna, Galle and Matara, but they were bashed pretty bad and would be unrecognisable except maybe Galle.

Also the elephant sanctuary is lovely, esp if you like taking photos.

Also the botanical gardens in Colombo, one of the 'park keepers' will tout their knowledge of the park but are worth a go - first time I ever had fresh cinnamon.

There's also a botanical gardens on road between Kandy and Colombo which is worth an afternoon.

Crap snorkelling in summer on West coast.

My husband comes from Sri Lanka, he went back a few years ago but he is useless ;-) there is a programme on at the moment on Good Food Channel My Sri Lanka with Peter Kuruvita and he travels around cooking, its interesting cos you do see bits, friends have visited the Millenium Elephant Sanctuary, its fab apparently :)) friends of mine who live in England run a fabulous little charity http://www.dogstarfoundation.com/ with the help of volunteers and the temple monks at Randeniya Temple they are fabulous :)

    • Closing down completely. The lovely people there are all retiring. Thanks, but Deptford is a long way to go to make two journeys to  take and collect a car! Do they not do even relatively minor repairs if it fails its MOT first time? Then that would require four journeys 😭 Wondering if there's already a thread on here for garage recommendations? People on my road WhatsApp group have recommended some local ones. I'm particularly gutted because apart from the lovely people who worked there,  Dell was a five minute walk for me!
    • I did think that might be the reason, but five years out of seven it's going to be a weekday (I think. Not sure how leap years might affect things!)
    • Probably because the 5th was a weekday. We still have the weekend to come. Also, some fireworks going off nearly every night for the last few months. Last night something was being let off that made a very deep booming noise every 10 seconds or so. That said, if the general public are beginning to see the harm done by firework noise and choosing to use low noise options and refusing to support organised events that still use the full throttle type, I for one would be very happy. Does anyone know if the Herne Hill Velodrome Halloween fireworks event used low noise options?
    • Are they like the 'Gilets Jaunes' with BTL mortgages?
