Celebrate Car-Free Day with your kids and bikes Sun Sept 22nd (update below)

Join us for Car-Free day and bring the kids. From 11am to 2.30pm we will be based at The Needle Sculpture, 1 London Bridge Walk, SE1 2SX, running rides and playing games to celebrate car-free London.

Our programme includes group rides around the car free area (including Tooley St, Tower Bridge, Bank, London Bridge) and there's loads more going on inside the zone, organised by the Mayor and other groups. East Dulwich to London Bridge is a 14 minute train ride with walk-on access at East Dulwich and London Bridge. The Needle (see pic) is just outside the station on the south side of the bridge at the junction with Duke Hill Street.

We will be organising some small competitions on Tooley St to test your cycling skills, e.g. slow

races, track standing, limbo. Bring any equipment for street games, e.g. tennis or badminton rackets and shuttles/balls, in case we get bored with cycling (unlikely, but we might just fancy a quick game of something else).

We are asking you to sign up at https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/southwark-cyclists-car-free-day-tickets-72845110687 so we have an idea of numbers and can do enough planning. If a lot of people are coming we will maintain a constant presence at the Needle. If not too many come, then you may have to search for us. Turn up any time. If we are not at the Needle, go in search and look for a bike with an orange flag on a tall pole.

There's been a lot of interest in this so we will have a presence at the Needle from 11am till 2.30. It's OK to make your mind up at the last minute. We will be there, leading rides, playing games and enjoying the entertainment the City has laid on

We are getting quite excited about Car Free Day on Sunday. In Southwark a larger area than we realised will be closed or very highly restricted. The latest information indicates "Managed Access" for Southwark St to Southwark Bridge Rd, Borough High St from London Bridge to the Borough, and St Thomas St. This seems to mean "Access Only" and on a Sunday this will be very light traffic.

Southwark Bridge is also closed to motor vehicles Northbound. Good map at https://www.london.gov.uk/sites/default/files/car_free_day_-_reimagine_event_map.pdf We plan to have a big banner at the Needle and to have someone there every hour on the hour from 11am to 2pm, and an information board indicating what group activities are taking place.

The weather forecast is 21 degrees, light southerly wind, 25% chance of a light rain shower, some sunshine.
