it's looking like our (free!!) holiday in a family member's static caravan in Pembrokeshire is a literal washout, so we're looking for something else, and in light of the weather at the mo think a city break would be best - I have to say the idea of a few days in the middle of nowhere in Wales in the pouring rain is frightening.

So, we thought of York. 2 hours from Kings Cross and loads of rainy day stuff to do. But, where to stay? Because we'd be going by train (though we could drive, but as this is going to cost us and right now we haven't a bean I think train will be best, for time and money) we can't take the travel cot, so wherever we go will have to have one.

Any tips, Family Roomers? Although I'm not keen on sharing a room with Miss Oi, to get some kind of cheapish holiday I don't mind this time. How does that work anyway, in a hotel room, for example - do you switch of the lights at bedtime for half an hour and then when they're asleep stick on a sidelight and watch telly? 2 room self catering would be best - can you get this in the city centre? I've had a very quick look online but thought I'd see if anyone has a recommendation.

Thanks!

We went to visit my brother who's at York Uni a few months ago. It's a fab city and we had a great time with our 3yr old and 6 month old. We were only there for 2 nights so stayed in the Novotel. 10 min walk from city centre and very accomodating staff, there were lots of other families there. We stayed in 1 room which was er fun especially as baby is not a great sleeper. The room wasn't huge double bed, single plus travel cot. We did as you describe bath stories bed them after they'd been asleep a while lamp and tv on (volume down!). I kept accusing oh of reading his mag too noisily but we saw the funny side and got no less sleep than we do at home (at least I didnt!). We ate early in Pizza Express 1 night and in the hotel bar another. They also have a swimming pool which was great. I believe they have larger rooms with an annex for the kids but these were sold out when we booked.

Having just got back from a very wet week in Wales I see where you're coming from. We had a small cottage so needed to get out but there are so few indoor activities suitable for small children. We came back early in the end.

    • I would leave London, or at a push move back to north London. In SE London if you want to get away in a car you are trapped, always an hour to go the first 10 miles, chugging up to the M4 or round the south circular, which is really just a line someone drew connecting a load of roads. and I know there are trains but first you have to get to those mainline stations, unless you only want to leave London to go to Kent. which I don't.
    • It was you who  made it personal in the first place,  Jazzer. You said you didn't feel safe in the streets,  and you said you didn't go to Central London because you didn't feel safe there. So are you now saying that wasn't "personal"? "Fire from the hip." Another interesting choice of words 🙄 I'm not "demanding" anything! I asked you some perfectly reasonable questions in  response to your own statements. None of which you have answered. Never mind. It seems to be pointless having a discussion with you. It's long past my bedtime. I'm going to turn on my sleep app  and go to sleep 😴💤
    • Hi Forumites, This afternoon someone in a dark blue/black saloon car collided with my parked car on Thompson Road, SE22 9JR. I have a neighbour’s doorbell cam footage of the collision at 14:30 19/09/2025 but am unable to identify the registration plate. If anyone has footage of a car travelling down Thompson Road towards Crystal Palace Road at that time please PM me. Of course if the Perp would like to confess they can also PM me. Thankyou.
