There have been past threads on this problem - there are underground streams coming down Underhill (and a spring in the garden of one house in the 90s) - but overall it is probably a water-table problem. Very heavy rain can cause localised problems including run-off as well.

We had this problem a few years ago in nunhead always after it rained heavily. Thames water kept fobbing us off with water table excuses until I told them I thought it was sewage. They tested it and said it did have ammonia in it, checked our drains with dye and said they were ok. if you live in a Victorian terrace, your drain is probably paired with a house on one side. Ours meet at a junction in our side return, go through to a junction in one next door neighbour's side return and out to the road under their house. N.B. Thames Water are responsible for the shared part. After months of battling, some intelligent chap from T.W. checked the drain on the OTHER neighbour's side and that was partly blocked, so when it rained heavily, it overflowed under their house and seeped into our cellar. Their cellar is blocked off and they didnt realise. Yuk.

Anyway, long story but it might be worth telling T.W. you think it might be sewage and they should come and check.

Coming home to a flooded basement is one of the worst things that can happen but happens in the springtime in a ton of homes. This is particularly true if you went on getaway during winter or did not use the water in the basement. Water lines freeze and break the pipes. This means that flooding when they melt.Get more information at: Payday Loan Money Advance

VaniJ,

I have a certain admiration for your get up and go spirit posting at 5.38 am. But really, using this thread as a blatant ad for Payday money loans with a link supplied is not on.

    • Is anyone else having difficulty booking Silver Swim sessions (Tuesday and Thursday between 3pm-4pm?) Almost all the spaces are taken before the online booking system opens at 10pm several days before. Last night there appeared to be one space available for next Tuesday. I tried to book at one second past 10pm but was unsuccessful. This seems to have been a recent phenomenon. I made a telephone call this morning but just received a recorded message saying that the voicemail box was full. Am I right in assuming that in person bookings are now taking precedence over online ones?
    • I completely agree with you, Angelina. But it's worth noting that no one else has a problem with her, or finds her rude /  has mentioned her aggressively banging gates / ringing doorbells etc.
    • But I don't think that was what you meant, was it? But he can hardly be held responsible for what somebody else did! Just discovered I forgot to post the above  last night, and now it's overtaken by long posts.  I don't have sufficient knowledge  to counter some of what has been said above, some of which appears to be opinion rather than facts, so it would be pointless for me to say anything else.
