The cycling hypermaniacs who organise Southwark Cyclists holiday rides never stop. There's another one on the 28th and this time the weather forecast is, if not precisely good, certainly a lot less off-putting.

This one starts at 9.30am in Peckham Square (next to Peckham Library and Peckham Pulse Leisure Centre, SE15 5JR)and ends in the same place at 1pm. The cycle route from East Dulwich is here: https://cycle.travel/map/journey/132834. I've started it from East Dulwich Station but you can change it to a more convenient starting place. I think you need to register to save your maps but this is a very user-friendly map-maker and very knowedgeable about bike routes.

Werner, who led the Boxing Day ride (see what's on passim) feels that it will not have metabolised all the turkey so proposes at + ride for the last Saturday of the year. Route ideas are sketchy at the moment, but may include a big loop incorporating Greenwich, Q14 to the South Bank then Q1 back. Leave Q1 for Falmouth Rd and Q7 (CW17?) to Burgess Park and a preview of some of the Spine route. Not many hills :)

We will proceed at our usual stately pace with a coffee stop about half way. A lot of quiet streets and avoiding any too-busy tarmac. What?s not to like?

This ride is organised by Bruce Lynn and friends (this is where Werner fits in) on behalf Southwark Cyclists. We are the borough branch of the London Cycling Campaign. The LCC campaigns for more bike-friendly roads across London and we concentrate on the same thing in Southwark. The whole series are called Healthy Rides because they help you to be healthy but more than that they get you out of the house, meeting people and gaining confidence on your bike and the road.

You can contact Southwark Cyclists on [email protected], tweet us @southwarkcycle; or text Bruce on 07729 279 945. Our website is here: https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk, the LCC website is here: https://lcc.org.uk. All our stuff is free and open to everyone no matter where you live. Enjoy.

    • No one is arguing that people should cycle without lights or reflectors. Obviously they should. It is also a legal requirement. But the colour of someone’s clothing? Is it ok to wear navy? What about green? What shade? At what point should we have ‘no reason for sympathy’ if they’re in a collision? I don’t want people to feel like they need special clothes just to walk or cycle. If you have lights and reflectors and you’re on well lit city streets, there is no reason why drivers shouldn’t be able to see you. But yes, if there are lots of people without lights, that should be addressed. I suspect in part, it's the change over in seasons and the fact that people are getting caught out by how early it's getting dark.

    • What a passionate thread this is. I have worked in cycling for years, am a cyclist, a driver, use public transport etc. Driving last night with my two young kids, who also cycle, we made the same observations. It was the kids who first asked me why are most cyclists wearing full black and no lights. We then played a game who can spot all the cyclists, and count those with lights and those without. This teaches them to look out for them but also not to put themselves in a position where we have to strain to find them.
    • On the plus side showers are warm down - for now 😆
