There was a stream running alongside Lordship Lane that ran to the Grove Vale confluence.

This map shows how it was culverted and the flow diverted to Nunhead.

This contributed to the drying out of the Grove Vale Waste (see the Rocque map) and helped make it feasible to build houses to the south of Grove Vale.

John - great stuff as always. But which Rocque map are you talking about? I couldn't see much on 1769 here
