I completely forgot to do anything about this on my brothers PC and now his PC is having a hissing fit about this and no security scan.

Is it easy to upgrade him to WIndows 10 and get microsoft security anyone know? He doesn't use his PC very often. BUt he does keep important stuff on it. TIA

I updated mine a couple of weeks ago using the download tool on this link... https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10

It's free if you have a Windows 7 licence, you'll need the licence key as part of the download.

It took a while so don't be put off if it appears slow or progress has stopped.

I didn't like the new start set-up so dowmloaded an app to make it look more like Windows 7...

Updating from Windows 7 to Windows 10 can be a problem.

If your Windows 7 PC was previously Windows Vista or if your PC is a few years old

it may not be suitable for Upgrade. It may not have a suitable Graphics Card for example.

I would opt for a New PC with Windows 10 installed and install ESET nod32 Antivirus.

ESET are easy to deal with and their products are relatively inexpensive especially if you

require extra Licences for more than one Device.

They are also easy to get hold of if you need to speak to someone. (a Person)

I spent some time on this and eventually got Win 10 installed in place of Win7. It work 100% Ok and it's best to have your system set for best performance rather that allowing windows to set the balance between performance and appearance as the latter imposes a heavy load and slows you down.

The secret is to go to C:\SWsetup folder and find the folder SW_Ver. Cut and paste this entire folder somewhere else temporarily in say C:\Temp.

Now you can do the upgrade to Win 10 and when its done paste the SW_Ver back again.

Let me know how you go.

Windows 10 has been out a couple of years now and hence Microsoft recommends that you don?t try to upgrade as the computer you?re trying to upgrade is likely to be 3 plus years old and in these days of technological obsolescence it?s time it was replaced. However there are plenty of computers 7+ years old that will run win 10 happily an so upgrades are possible. The official cost of Win 10 is at least ?50, depending on the version you buy and the media it?s supplied on. Depending on the computer there?s no guarantee that the hardware will still be compatible with Win 10, one of the other reasons MS recommend you buy a new machine.

There are links to articles that say that you can still upgrade for free. This could be worth a go as it would save you the cash, which if the upgrade failed would have been a waste. Whatever you do make sure anything important is backed up before starting any upgrade.

Windows 10 prices vary.

Official copies with Valid License Key from Microsoft are the most expensive.

Copies from elsewhere available for <?30.00 may not be genuine copies and Possibly will not accept Updates

from Microsoft.

There are 2 versions according to what P.C. you have

Windows 10 64-bit is recommended if you have 4 GB or more RAM.

Windows 10 64-bit supports up to 2 TB of RAM, while

Windows 10 32-bit can utilize up to 3.2 GB.

The memory address space for 64-bit Windows is much larger, which means, you need twice as much memory than 32-bit

Windows to accomplish some of the same tasks.20 Mar 2019

No worries nxjen, if you go to Control Panel and then System, it will show you Windows 10 details including the product ID number.

This is a useful tutorial on the whole process and it's how I found out how to change 10's tile layout back to 7's classic look...

    • I highly recommend Temi as a very skilled and reliable painter / decorator based in the East Dulwich & SE London area. She has completed many jobs for us over the past 10 years at our property on Overhill Road SE22 and also on Harlescott Road SE15, and we have always been thoroughly impressed with her work. We often leave her with keys and leave her to work her magic, fully confident that she's 100% trustworthy and will always do a fantastic job. If you're looking for a trustworthy local decorator who delivers exceptional work Temi is a great person to call. I'm not affiliated with her or her business in any way and actually found her through a recommendation on the ED forum over 10 years ago, i just like to recommend really good tradespeople who deserve a thank you. • ''He caused chaos  in this country with his put down of everything British and his many dismal words about the effects of Brexit on this country.'' What utter tosh. Carney had to mitigate the effects of Brexit caused by plastic patriots like Farage. For example, immediately after the 2016 Brexit vote the BoE had to intervene fiscally by dropping interest rates and increasing QE in order to prevent the economy from taking a big hit.  They were unable to prevent the £ from crashing at the time, and it has since been worked out that the effect of that alone caused a circa £900/year hit to each UK household, which equates to the UK @ £450m/week.   There's reams of data out there that shows the economic damage Brexit has caused to the UK. Here's one looking at business investment, admittedly not very sexy but kinda important if you want to achieve economic growth. It's clear to see that prior to 2016 we had reached parity with some of our main rivals, but since then we've flatlined. All that Brexit has achieved is to win the race to the bottom. There's a reason why Farage never brought up Brexit at the last election, he knows himself it hasn't delivered on any of the promises, quite the reverse in fact.  Labour, stupidly, by saying they can make Brexit work have in effect given Farage a Get Out of Jail Free card...
