Probably my stupidity, but I have not been able to find any predictions as to how long this situation is likely to last. If anything reliable is available, of course.

We had already cancelled/postponed our next two upcoming gigs, and will cancel the May ones, but I'm wondering for how long to "wait and see" for June or just to cancel/postpone them now.

The Autumn ones can wait until we see how the situation is over the summer.

I?m genuinely interested as to how you come across this sort of stuff but not information from any credible source?

Agree with this. It's obviously a serious issue, which needs due attention, but it's non-stop

(And almost exclusively covid-19 news) from most media outlets.

With all the 'social distancing' going on, people are seeing other people increasing less, living in a bit of a bubble and working themselves into a lather with the news being their major window to the outside world....

The Commons Health and Social Care Select Committee has a session of inquiry into "Preparations for Coronavirus" this afternoon that may be of interest. Starts at 13:45 according to https://committees.parliament.uk/, though the https://parliamentlive.tv/Event/Index/cced67ec-c445-4698-a21b-7d9ff8a01354 channel, at which it can be caught live or in recording, says 14:00, which I think is more likely. A written transcript usually turns up shortly thereafter. I suspect I'll find it a lot more interesting and less stressing than this, fairly typical, forum thread.

I'm continuing to update, at the top of page 6, the daily counts of confirmed cases in Southwark, as issued at https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-51768274. It's now at 33. I wonder if some of the variability in the apparent rate of increase (latest counts: 11, 13, 28, 33) could be due as much to the way cases reach official awareness as to the real-world incidence, which is likely to be higher, perhaps much higher. I trust that there are various stratagems in operation, such as GP surgery reports or random population sampling, to get ongoing true estimates of the numbers actually infected.

Can anyone recommend any other public fora, newsgroups, mailing lists, blogs,etc where there's any fairly expert discussion of the issues and science? I'm feeling nostalgia for the days of Usenet, etc.

I was involved in both planning for Sars and Avian Flu. The measures go well beyond what we considered likely at those respective times - but (a) what is going on in the continent will influence our response (b) the world has moved on since my time with the ease of home working © this is a different beast in terms of transmission and health impacts.

It is reassuring that we are still taking an evidence with the experts full involvement, that this is a collective decision, and that somehow they've got Bojo to show gravitas and speak plainly/succinctly. This was a strength in most PMs in history.

Select Committee's are always interesting and history will judge.

If the Government were that concerned about people going to the Pub they would make pubs close.

But they make Millions from Duty and VAT on alcohol sales

Like if they were concerned about Tobacco they would ban it.

I did go to the EDT to find out the current situation.

The EDT was quieter than usual but has NO intention at this time to be closing its doors.

No Foxy, if they forced pubs to close they would be making insurance claims possible. This advisory method introduces the idea of further restrictions to the public and crucially props up the economy (for the time being) whilst helpfully protecting the govt from business seeking financial recompense.

DF, the problem for the government is in not sending small business to the wall. In other words, this government still hasn't yet got a full pandemic head on. It is hoping that people will follow advice and reduce the need for more draconian measures. That approach clearly did not work in France however, so some might say it is only a matter of time.

The other thing is that government is also stretched to think of every impact of every decision and find solutions - things are moving so fast. The very idea we can be thinking of trade negotiations with the EU at this time for example, is bonkers. And thank goodness we are still in transition and part of the single market, and able to access all the food and other imports we are going to need over the coming months.

So stop referencing idiotic social media mouthpieces and start understanding the facts. This pandemic (and it IS a pandemic) has the potential to push the world into war levels of debt. The best chance we have of getting through it and getting back to normal, is to slow the spread and buy time, for either a vaccine or combination drug treatments that work to emerge. Understand why, understand that COVID19 is 30 times more lethal than seasonal flu, understand what an 18 percent hospitalisation rate means for the NHS and do your part to help make sure we don't get anywhere near to that worst case scenario.

DF the government don't make millions, the government raise money to pay for things that we need in our society. Like the NHS. But on the cynical side if they truly cared about the environment then they would raise fuel duty. Shocking. OK not a covid-19 specific comment.

The trouble is ianr, you could be infected early, then over and out rather than over with and carry on.

And in any case, "they" don't have enough info at the moment to know whether you would be permanently immune once you have been infected, or whether the immunity might wear off.

Plus the present form of the virus might mutate. And probably will at some point.

I've been trying to find data to support Patrick Vallance's claim that the UK is in ?the top three or four countries in terms of testing" .

I can only find this table from 9 March on Worldometers https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/covid-19-testing/

which ,even with my shocking absence of numeracy,suggests to me that the UK is not up there in terms of testing .

Does anyone else have more detail or views ?
