Best way from ED to East Croydon to Gatwick

I want to get to Gatwick via EC and avoid going into town. I don't particularly want to take the bus to EC. ED station is nearest to me but I suspect I may have to go to Forest Hill. It's a while since I've flown from Gatwick so not sure what's best. Can anyone advise please?

yep, forest hill, then either direct train to EC, or a change at Norwood Junction (this doesn't usually involve going up and down steps, just other side of the platform).
