Hello, just wondering if anyone knows how long family have to empty a council property after a death at this time.

I'm wondering if any exception is made due to virus and lockdown as cannot do it alone and not allowed a group of people so what to do as council saying they are going to change locks but all property still in flat. Thx in advance

Hi Delanie,

I am very sorry for your loss. Councils can be unsympathetic at the best of times, but hopefully they can make adjustments during this time. I am assuming that the council in question is Southwark.

If I were you I'd contact Cambridge House Law Centre. They are still available, but are working remotely. They have a very good housing team and used to receive funding from Southwark to give free advice to Southwark residents:

'We are still offering all of our normal services to new and existing clients during this lockdown. To control the spread of the coronavirus, we are working remotely and helping people by email and over the phone because our offices are closed.

To contact the Law Centre, please call 020 7358 7025 between 10am and 1pm, or 2pm and 4pm, Monday to Friday. You can also email us on [email protected] with your details and we will get back to you. If we are unable to assist you we will direct or signpost you to someone who can.' [https://ch1889.org/law-centre]

If you are dealing with another council, then the CAB or Shelter England both have very good advice lines:

Other options would be to get your local Councillor and/or MP involved, but I would try the legal advice route first.

Best wishes,

Ilona

    • It was indeed in the vicinity of DKH. I live on the ED estate and I could tell it must be close by because of the noise. When I left my house this morning I found the culprits litter still in the middle of the st. It looked like they had lit a whole box on fire in the middle of the road. My cat jumped out of her skin. I’ll try and report it on Southwark website same as I have had to with other illegal use this week. Any other ideas for what we can do with the photos? Maybe one of the Southwark councillors. It’s outrageous and dangerous behaviour.
    • Had another great meal there…. those that haven’t tried it, give it a go.. have a special lunch menu as well so you can get a flavour of the food.
    • If you "cotton on" and read the council announcement, it clearly states "The library will be closed from 17 November until late June or early July 2026."  https://www.southwark.gov.uk/2025/dulwich-library-closing-refurbishment
    • I’ve been seeing Lisa at goose green clinic for energy work for a year now.  Lisa is kind, caring and hugely supportive. She is wonderfully masterful and trained as a reiki master for 20 plus years. Alongside other energy work.  My time spent with her is like therapy. An emotional safe space for deep conversations and reflection followed by relaxing and energising healing work.  each experience I’ve had has been different, the end result remains the same. Feel lighter, almost euphoric and almost float home. Definitely an experience not to be missed.  https://www.goosegreenclinic.net/therapies/healing-energy-work/
