Any experts on shared ownership with housing assoc?

Recommended Posts

Hello

just looking for some advice. My late father moved into a Housing Association property around 2001 - in 2003 he purchased a share of the property, around 42 per cent, paying rent on the part he did not own. He told us that he had purchased a further share, we think around 2007, bringing his share to 65 per cent. However, now that we have sold the property, the Housing Association say they have no record of him buying this extra share. Initially we accepted this as perhaps Dad getting confused but now, having gone through the selling of my Dad's flat and having to deal with their incompetence in all sorts of serious matters and them not really seem to know what they're doing my brother and I are concerned that Dad was right and they've just lost the paperwork. We are about the release the money back to the Housing Association for what Dad did not own but there's still a niggling doubt that he did indeed own 65% and we are just giving his money away. I know this is a long one but is there any way we can check and double check he definitely did not buy that extra share? thanks so much to anyone who can help.

God that's awful, I really wish I knew what to suggest. My Mum's good at things like this, so I'll ask her. Has your Dad got absolutely no records of his own for when (if) he bought the other share. Believe me, I understand how incompetant such organisations are. Southwark has been nothing but a nightmare with my housing benefits, nothing but mistakes made on their behalf, lost paperwork of which I've sent them, having someone else' information in my file including someone else' bank details!, and the list goes on. Agh! is all I can say and that I really sympathise. Don't take any action until you can find a way to make sure.

Have you been through the bank statements? If you haven't got them, banks should be able to produce at least six year's worth of statements for a small fee (you'll need grant of probate and a death certificate, but presumably you've been through that already). Even if the account's been closed, they should still have the records.

If a large payment to Mole Valley isn't there (which might be the case if he'd paid from a different account that he later closed), a sudden decrease in the rental payments would suggest he had bought an extra share. If you find neither, then you'll have a clearer mind.

    • Kwik Fit buggered up an A/C leak diagnosis for me (saying there wasn't one, when there was) and sold a regas. The vehicle had to be taken to an A/C specialist for condensor replacement and a further regas. Not impressed.
    • Yes, these are all good points. I agree with you, that division has led us down dangerous paths in the past. And I deplore any kind of racism (as I think you probably know).  But I feel that a lot of the current wave of xenophobia we're witnessing is actually more about a general malaise and discontent. I know non-white people around here who are surprisingly vocal about immigrants - legal or otherwise. I think this feeling transcends skin colour for a lot of people and isn't as simple as, say, the Jew hatred of the 1930s or the Irish and Black racism that we saw laterally. I think people feel ignored and looked down upon.  What you don't realise, Sephiroth, is that I actually agree with a lot of what you're saying. I just think that looking down on people because of their voting history and opinions is self-defeating. And that's where Labour's getting it wrong and Reform is reaping the rewards.
    • @Sephiroth you made some interesting points on the economy, on the Lammy thread. Thought it worth broadening the discussion. Reeves (irrespective of her financial competence) clearly was too downbeat on things when Labour came into power. But could there have been more honesty on the liklihood of taxes going up (which they have done, and will do in any case due to the freezing of personal allowances).  It may have been a silly commitment not to do this, but were you damned if you do and damned if you don't?
    • I'd quit this thread, let those who just want to slag Labour off have their own thread.  Your views on the economy are worth debating.  I'm just stunned how there wasn't this level of noise with the last government.  I could try to get some dirt on Badenoch but she is pointless  Whilst I am not a fan of the Daily Mirror at least there is some respite from Labour bashing. https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/politics/grenfell-hillsborough-families-make-powerful-36175862 https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/politics/nigel-farage-facing-parliamentary-investigation-36188612
