I think books are a great idea, some childrens classics or something that meant something to you when you were a child. Our youngest daughters Godmother got her a tree which I think is lovely, as long as the recipient isn't planning on moving house. The other daughters Godmother made a sampler picture of winnie the pooh and got her a hardback winnie the pooh book. I thought they were lovely presents and we will keep them forever.
Quite traditional, but my daughter received a charm bracelet from her godmother for her christening and still wears it now, a few years later. I also bought my goddaughter one (from Links), with an "N" charm (she was christened Naomi) for her christening, and have then bought her charms for some of her birthdays/ christmasses since.
Also, I do think books are a lovely idea. If there is a character in a book/ play that has the same name as the child being christened, I have bought the child a special edition of that book, which has been well received eg. Just William books for a William, and As You Like It for a Beatrice (I think. Sleep-deprived head might have got that play wrong). Just have to make sure the relevant character didn't come to a sticky end in the book!
My younger son was given a really lovely Noah's Ark for his recent christening by one of his godparents, which I thought was a really nice idea. My other son received some classic beautiful books of children's poetry and some crockery from the Bunnikins range amongst other things...oh and a really lovely ceramic piggy bank from Tiffany's, which while he can't 'play' with it is much nicer than a lot of money boxes you see, and he does like to put money in it.
I bought a star for my goddaughter and for 2 older children for their confirmation. They come in different priced packages so it needn't be too expensive. You get to name the star and recieve a certificate with the stars co-ordinates and a little map with the star marked on it. Its something different!

    • Yes it is  devious and it feels not dissimilar to Maga shenanigans over the pond, putting a bill through in the middle of the night. The weather forecast does not look great for Gala- light rain forecast. Hoping the forecast is accurate and rainfall is not heavier ( thinking about the impact at Brockwell, last year).
    • That's incredibly devious
