Free social cycle rides Saturday July 11th

Recommended Posts

these rides are being organised and led by Southwark Cyclists who are the borough branch of the London Cycling Campaign https://lcc.org.uk//. We are again offering 3 different rides on Saturday 11th July. Like last week you MUST book using Eventbrite. All three rides are included as a single Eventbrite post. This means the header information on Eventbrite covers the whole event and not any individual ride. You should choose the ticket for the ride you want. There are six places on each ride and it will be really important to maintain social distancing all the time.

Book here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/healthy-cycle-rides-tickets-112379650560 If you are booked but find you cannot make the ride, please make sure you cancel on Eventbrite so that someone else can take your place and save other riders waiting for you to turn up. Even a last minute cancellation may let someone else take your place -- some riders keep a close eye on bookings right up to start time.

Ride 1 is from Canada Water to Blackheath and Greenwich starting at 10am and lasting two hours. Simon will be leading. It will start and finish in Deal Porter Square, SE16 7AR. Riders will have a chance to learn some local history on a route that includes lots of off road path. The outward leg takes the Thames Path (Cycleway 14) to Greenwich, then up the hill through Greenwich Park to the Observatory. There will be a short loop on to Blackheath then back through Greenwich Park and on to Greenwich DLR Station. The group will pick up Cycleway 1 and take this to Millwall Ground (New Den). Then quiet streets to Southwark Park and on to Deal Porter Square. That's approximately 11 miles, with just one hill (in Greenwich Park) that can be walked.

Ride 2 will be from Dulwich Park to Crystal Palace. Again two hours, starting at 10am and ending at 12 noon. Bruce will be leading. It starts and finishes at Dulwich Clock Cafe, Dulwich Park, SE21 7BQ. This is a relatively flat route to the south end of Crystal Palace Park, then ride back up through the park (having a look at the dinosaurs on the way and walking the steep bits). Then a glorious long downhill back to Dulwich Park. Groups have ridden this route several times, see report of our ride in the snow, Feb 2nd 2019, http://healthyrider.weebly.com/healthy-ride-reports-jan-march2019.html. Route

Ride 3 is from Burgess Park to the Royal Parks, same starting time, 10am but slightly longer, returning at 1pm. Jane will be leading. She will be starting at the Park Life Cafe, Burgess Park, Chumleigh St, off Albany Rd. SE5 0RJ. The route passes many famous places: South Bank, Covent Garden, Regents Park, Hyde Park (probable coffee stop at Sports Centre), Green Park, Birdcage Walk (next to St James Park), Houses of Parliament. We rode this route in January this year, and there's a report at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/healthy-ride-reports-2020/royal-parks-loop-healthy-ride/. Route at https://gb.mapometer.com/cycling/route_4989284.html

Please don't forget - if you cannot make a booked ride, PLEASE CANCEL

There are still three places on the Royal Parks ride and all six places on the Crystal Palace ride.

The weather forecast is good cycling weather. Everyone welcome. The Royal Parks ride contains some very useful route-finding and is well worth knowing

    • No one is arguing that people should cycle without lights or reflectors. Obviously they should. It is also a legal requirement. But the colour of someone’s clothing? Is it ok to wear navy? What about green? What shade? At what point should we have ‘no reason for sympathy’ if they’re in a collision? I don’t want people to feel like they need special clothes just to walk or cycle. If you have lights and reflectors and you’re on well lit city streets, there is no reason why drivers shouldn’t be able to see you, assuming of course, that they're driving with due care and attention. But yes, if there are lots of people without lights, that should be addressed. I suspect in part, it's the change over in seasons and the fact that people are getting caught out by how early it's getting dark now (obviously no excuse).

    • What a passionate thread this is. I have worked in cycling for years, am a cyclist, a driver, use public transport etc. Driving last night with my two young kids, who also cycle, we made the same observations. It was the kids who first asked me why are most cyclists wearing full black and no lights. We then played a game who can spot all the cyclists, and count those with lights and those without. This teaches them to look out for them but also not to put themselves in a position where we have to strain to find them.
