two sociable cycle rides Sat July 25th

Recommended Posts

Southwark Cyclists are running two different rides on Saturday 25th July. You MUST now book using Eventbrite. Both rides are included as a single event. This means the header information on Eventbrite covers the whole event and is not correct for any individual ride. You should choose the ticket for the ride you want. You will find sux places available for each ride.

Note because there are two rides with different end times and locations within this "Event" your ticket will give the overall timing and the SE5 post code for both rides. The correct timings and locations for each ride are given in the details below. Confused, yes indeed, however hold on, all the detail you need to know is below.

Finally and possibly most importantly: if you are booked but find you cannot make the ride, please CANCEL on Eventbrite. That way groups don't wait around for you, and an extra person can come on the ride. Even at the very last minute it is worth cancelling as some riders keep a close eye on bookings right up to start time.

Ride 1: Burgess Park to Design Museum and Brompton Cemetery. This is a three hour ride, 10am to 1pm, led by Jane, it starts and finishes at Park Life Caf?, Burgess Park, Chumleigh Gdns, off Albany Rd, SE5 0RJ. It's an easy 16 mile ride with some nice off-road in the parks and lots to see. The outward leg will go through Hyde Park and on to Holland Park, probably stopping at the Design Museum for a short break, then returning via Brompton Cemetery and Battersea Park. The group should be back at Burgess Park around one o?clock. There's a report of a previous ride (Sept 15th 2018 with 33 riders!) at http://healthyrider.weebly.com/healthy-ride-reports-aug-sept-2018.html. Approx route track at http://gb.mapometer.com/cycling/route_4497331.html

Ride 2: Greenwich to Canada Water via Wapping and Tower Bridge. This ride is shorter, just two hours, 10am to 12 noon and containing several firsts for this series of sociable local rides. First it is not going to finish where it starts. Second it will involve a trip on the DLR. The meeting point is in front of the Greenwich mainline station in Greenwich High Road, next to Novotel Hotel, NOT the DLR station where there are stairs. The group will catch the Docklands Light Railway and take a train from platform 3 to Mudchute, about a 6 minute ride. (Anyone wanting to meet at Mudchute Stn. be there by 10.10). They will skirt Mudchute Park to Westferry Road, on through Wapping to St Katherine's Dock, over Tower Bridge to end at Canada Water Library (Deal Porter Square). All this is a mixture of (quiet) main roads, CS3, cobbles & Thames Path. The organisers are using the DLR to cross the river, as the lifts are not working in Greenwich foot tunnel. With the selected stations, there are no stairs or lifts, just some ramps. Please bring a FACE COVERING & TRAVEL PASSES FOR DLR.

    • No one is arguing that people should cycle without lights or reflectors. Obviously they should. It is also a legal requirement. But the colour of someone’s clothing? Is it ok to wear navy? What about green? What shade? At what point should we have ‘no reason for sympathy’ if they’re in a collision? I don’t want people to feel like they need special clothes just to walk or cycle. If you have lights and reflectors and you’re on well lit city streets, there is no reason why drivers shouldn’t be able to see you, assuming of course, that they're driving with due care and attention. But yes, if there are lots of people without lights, that should be addressed. I suspect in part, it's the change over in seasons and the fact that people are getting caught out by how early it's getting dark now (obviously no excuse).
    • Found it but cannot contact owner as no email or message on it. e*****@icloud.com   please let me know if you’ve recently lost an Apple Watch SE
    • What a passionate thread this is. I have worked in cycling for years, am a cyclist, a driver, use public transport etc. Driving last night with my two young kids, who also cycle, we made the same observations. It was the kids who first asked me why are most cyclists wearing full black and no lights. We then played a game who can spot all the cyclists, and count those with lights and those without. This teaches them to look out for them but also not to put themselves in a position where we have to strain to find them.
