Hiya all

Has anyone noticed the low level, but regular appearance of abandoned suitcases, still with air travel paperwork attached, and discarded items inside, left around on the area's streets?

I have a fantasy about this; it's a luggage nicking ring taking them from Heathrow, and abandoning them away from the airport after going through them.

When a burglar breaks into a place they grab the nearest bag / suitcase in the property and ram in all they want. I am guessing what you are seeing is discarded suitcases from such robberies. Most people leave the airport tags on their holiday suitcases until they are next going away. Always lock your suitcases in your own home that way they can't be used should the worst happen.

Is it a man in a suit case?

I'd invite you back to my place

It's only mine because it holds my suitcase

It looks like home to me alright

But it's a hundred miles from yesterday night

Must I be the man in a suitcase

Is it me, the man with the stranger's face

Must I be the man in a suitcase

Is it me, the man with the stranger's face

Another key for my collection

For security I race for my connection

Bird in a flying cage you'll never get to know me well

The world's my oyster, a hotel room's a prison cell

Nope - if there's no luggage handy, they strip a sheet off the bed and pile their loot into that. Perhaps you could lock your bedding in the suitcase? ;-p

I have just returned from Budapest. There, on the first weekend in March (Friday-Sunday) people put out into the street anything they don?t want (including suitcases), but also old and both broken and sound furniture, electrical goods, toys, carpets etc. The sorts of things we tend to skip. For three days people wander about, taking anything that they want (these people were described as ?gypsies? but I felt that was a generalised calumny from my taxi-driver informant). Each night of the three the municipality clears everything away.

It?s rather like a city-wide spring clean.

I?m not suggesting this for ED (for a start, the people in Budapest were very clean and tidy about their disposal, the heaps were all neat and were being ?managed? by their ?owners?) ? but maybe a once-a-year suitcase dump in an organised and ?cleared away? manner wouldn?t be a bad thing. I certainly have some that I would be glad to see them back-of.

    • This leaflet has the tone of a social media post emanating from Mar-a-Largo at 2am. The Lib Dems adopting the vernacular of the far right. Truly shameful.  What constitutes a RADICAL MARXIST? Is that distinct from a moderate marxist (lower case)? Cultural Marxist is used in right-wing circles as code to disparage Jews. So, exactly what is a RADICAL MARXIST, Lib Dems? Perhaps James Barber could pop like a low-rent (but equally annoying) Microsoft paperclip to explain: “Hi, looks like you’re thinking of voting for a Marxist…”
    • lol! The Greens have picked up a bunch of support into the last few months precisely because they have gone much further to the left. If you wanted a leaflet that made disaffected Labour voters aware that there was a leftist alternative to Labour in Dulwich, and to reassure mainstream Labour voters feel like the Corbynite fringe was fucking off at long last, then this is what it would look like.  Meanwhile the Lib Dems' solution to SEND and social care funding crises, a failure to build any private or social housing, climate change and all the rest is..."community wardens". 🤣 They really seem to be out of tune with the state of the country at the moment: it's crazy that they could have observed the comms failure of Starmer's incremental managerialism and thought to themselves, "you know what people want? More of that attitude, but with even less impact".
    • Ollie's is another restaurant concept from the same people that do the Megan's chain. It was pretty mercilessly mocked on a thread somewhere on here. The Megan's branch on Lordship Lane closed not that long after it opened for a rebirth as an Ollie's, but it didnt seem to have happened last time I noticed. The Crown & Greyhound is closed until Thu 19 March for renovations (and staff training, hopefully...). The Romeo Jones booze and entertainment licence application closes for comments sometime this week. Simba Dulwich Ltd is the applicant. https://southlondon.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/london-borough-of-southwark-simba-dulwich-ltd-premises-licence-1.pdf
    • I don't know whose idea in the Lib Dems it was to put round a flyer saying that James' radical Marxist (in red caps) views are "at odds with East Dulwich and Goose Green residents", plus a load of ridiculous alarmist b******s. They may like to know that putting this round has had the opposite effect on me to that presumably intended. In local elections I usually vote for individuals who I think will do a good job  rather than  voting for particular parties, but as far as I am concerned the Lib Dems have shot themselves in the foot with the contents of this flyer, because I shan't be voting for any of them.
