Hi everyone

I wanted to update you all on where we are with the donations for the container to Malawi as many of you are asking.

We've had a fantastic outpour of donations from the Dulwich community - much more than I ever imagined when I posted the add. It's an amazing humbling experience and I want to say thank you to everyone that has been so very kind.

The container is now being filled but we are still accepting donations and I will be updating the list of items according to what we receive over the next few weeks.

Once the container is filled and ready to go, we will need to arrange a crane to lift it off it's current location and transport it to the sea port and all the way to Malawi. As you can imagine this will not be cheap, so AquAid have created a Gofundme page to raise money to pay for the freight costs.

We'd really appreciate if you could share the link below with friends, family and the community so that together we can raise the money we need to ship the container.

Here below is the link & original post with the list of items required. Thank you all very much!!!

Elena

ORGINAL POST:

My husband and I support a UK Charity called AquAid Lifeline Fund (www.lifelinefund.org.uk). In a nutshell, AquAid have multiple schools, homes and clinics in Malawi who take care of orphaned children. I?d be happy to provide more details if required.

We?ve purchased a 40? container that is in the process of being filled here in the UK with a large selection of donated goods to be sent to these children. We wondered if people from Dulwich & Peckham may be willing to donate any of items below. Everything listed can be second-hand or new. All we ask is that clothes are clean and everything is fit for purpose. So, here goes.....

Shoes suitable for school

Educational teaching aids inc any for visually and learning impaired children

New exercise books/biros

School lab equipment...in fact anything useful for schooling as they have so little.

Calculators

Backpacks/rucksacks

Craft items for schools, paint, paper etc

Bicycles

Musical instruments...be great to start a band!

Tools - carpentry, metalwork, motor mechanics - all for our student's vocational training courses (large items also accepted)

Workbenches

Ladders

Warm Blankets

Bed sheets

Sleeping bags

Sewing machines - manual or electric

Tailors dummy

Knitting machines and wool

Sports equipment

Football's

Football kits

Football boots

Suitcases - all sizes

Rotavator, poly tunnel, gardening tools

Glasses (these will be checked and labelled by a professional optician)

Rolls of fabric suitable for making into clothes

Job lot of sweeties in little packets.... everyone deserves a little treat now and again so we'd love to include one for each and every one of the children.

Children's clothes:

As for clothes sizes, we no longer need any clothes for children under 5 or adults larger than size 12 (for ladies) or medium (for men).

Should you have anything else you think might be useful...please don't hesitate to contact us.

Huge thanks for reading such long email. :)

    • I think you need to get a grip If it's who I am thinking of, she's a young black girl in her twenties, has braids with bright colours through them and - I suspect - works with her father. It's always the same man behind the wheel and he's older than her, always in the same van, so I'm assuming it's a father-daughter combo which, if it is, I think is rather sweet.  They hustle hard in a job that is poorly paid, has little prospects, is relentless and thankless. The fact that they have stuck it out since the pandemic says a lot about them.  I think she's a lovely girl, who's perhaps a little shy - but she'll smile or chat back if you make the effort with her. And I admire her for sticking with that job for so long. Perhaps she's just one of these people who's naturally a bit clumsy or bashes things, the same way some people are heavy on their feet when they walk. But I wouldn't dream of jeopardising her job because she closes the slams the gate and doesn't 'kiss' the ring doorbell with her fingers.  Perhaps she's being passive aggressive because you are. And perhaps she also wishes she got to spend her time worrying about potential damage to her letterbox or her gate.  As for your gate / letterbox - you're talking about hypotheticals. Has there been any damage? No. Then go and live your life and worry about it when it happens.  (apols we have the wrong person, but some of my points still stand).
    • Greg did an amazing job! He built a cabinet in my living room and added shelving. A lovely guy and perfectionist who goes the extra mile. He really understands what you want and comes up with various options to meet your price range. Would highly recommend!
    • I love the fact that virtually everyone held their hands out when furlough payments were made yet can't equate massive debt with massive cash payments to keep the economy ticking over.
    • The problem with delivery people nowadays is that they are on such a restrictive schedule that they literally have to just try to deliver and run, otherwise they are penalised. I understand the frustration though.   And good luck making any kind of complaint to Evri. I once sold a laptop on ebay, took it to the Evri pick-up, where it was processed and it then went 'missing' between their pick-up place and the hub. Went through a long, long process where they offered me a desultory amount in compensation and I had to take them to small claims court before they came up with a fair offer the day before we were due to be in court. Long story short, Evri are shite.   Go to look at this forum for the number of people who have issues: https://nationalconsumerservice.co.uk/forum/183-postal-and-delivery-services/
