Royal Mail vans collected your mail from street Post Boxes in your road and delivered the same day locally.

Two old pence per letter, send a letter to mum that ? you wont be home for tea going to the pictures with my pal from work ?.

This little Austin Seven was quite rare, I bought one in later years so simple to work on.

A little later GPO changed their vans to Morris and stayed with them for years.

Sixty new pence now for a letter, that might come in time to tell you not to worry that your daughter might be home three days ago but will be late as going to the pictures.

There were lots of the Austin Vans, I had one, I also had a 1929 Austin Chummy in the fifties.

Worst thing was the cable brakes used to stretch,

and I would fit a device that took up the tension called a " Keep death off the road ".

The law at that time said you must have a light showing while parked in the hours of darkness in a main road. I fitted a light from the battery by crocodile clips then clamped it to the roof gutter, showing a red light to the rear and a white one to the front.

In the morning the battery became flat so I had to crank it to start.

    • I hope witnesses are phoning 999 to report a crime in progress.
    • Under Section 3 of Criminal Law Act 1967 ANY PERSON may use such force as necessary in the prevention of crime or assisting in the arrest of offenders or suspected offenders. Key message is the force used must be proportionate.  Sadly many of these offenders carry knives (such as the two who stabbed people in Bishopsgate when bystanders intervened. The offenders were subsequently tracked down but it might have been a murder enquiry but for a few millimetres.) Therefore robust action should only be taken if you are confident. As per the previous post, your actions will be scrutinised but could be completely lawful.
    • And at about 8 I saw a phone being snatched on Grove Vale-as well as horrible for the victim it was incredibly dangerous.  Bike rider rode along pavement at high speed and then continued on to cut into road in equally dangerous manner
    • Leon is a fantastic electrician. He's recently done a couple of jobs for us during a renovation. He's done them brilliantly. The standard of the work is exceptional - we've had some other electricians in who haven't done anywhere near as great a job. Also, he's brilliant at communicating about the job at hand in a clear and concise way. Would highly recommend!
