Social cycle rides Saturday October 10th

There were three rides this Saturday (10th Oct) but they were full before I could post them.

So here is a fourth.

All the ride places on the 3 rides notified yesterday have been taken within a day. Philippa has nobly offered a 4th ride starting from Canada Water, details below. As ever, you must register on Eventbrite, link at end of this post.

Having 2 rides starting at the same time and place has some consequences regarding the Covid Regulations. These state: " avoid social interaction with anyone outside the group you are with, even if you see other people you know? https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-meeting-with-others-safely-social-distancing/coronavirus-covid-19-meeting-with-others-safely-social-distancing

Applies to anyone, in another group or just passing by. The London Cycling Campaign (LCC) leadership is very concerned that cyclists in groups larger than 6 will present the image that cyclists do not keep to the Covid regulations.

What is not clear in the regulations is what happens when a group breaks up, how quickly you can become part of another group. It appears to be assumed that you can do this straight away. For example if two friends who are on different rides want to have lunch together immediately after the ride, can they? Probably best not to get too involved in all this and apply common sense. Avoid forming groups >6 and keep socially distanced. Cannot see that 2 people cannot leave groups and speak to one another, 2m distanced, and 2m from groups. I wear a face mask at the start of rides when there is mingling (at least I do when I remember ? I always INTEND to).

So please at the start and finish of rides:

Keep in your groups of 6

Only talk to those outside your group away from the group and socially distanced.

Consider wearing a face mask.

All these rides are run by Bruce Lynn and friends on behalf of Southwark Cyclists, https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/. We are part of the London Cycling Campaign https://www.lcc.org.uk/. There are loads of tips for cycling in the coronavirus crisis on our website and suggestions on rides. You can contact us on [email protected] (slow method) or text Bruce on 07729 279 945 to be added to his rides list. Everything we do is free and (we hope) friendly and fun.

    • No one is arguing that people should cycle without lights or reflectors. Obviously they should. It is also a legal requirement. But the colour of someone’s clothing? Is it ok to wear navy? What about green? What shade? At what point should we have ‘no reason for sympathy’ if they’re in a collision? I don’t want people to feel like they need special clothes just to walk or cycle. If you have lights and reflectors and you’re on well lit city streets, there is no reason why drivers shouldn’t be able to see you, assuming of course, that they're driving with due care and attention. But yes, if there are lots of people without lights, that should be addressed. I suspect in part, it's the change over in seasons and the fact that people are getting caught out by how early it's getting dark now (obviously no excuse).
    • Found it but cannot contact owner as no email or message on it. e*****@icloud.com   please let me know if you’ve recently lost an Apple Watch SE
    • What a passionate thread this is. I have worked in cycling for years, am a cyclist, a driver, use public transport etc. Driving last night with my two young kids, who also cycle, we made the same observations. It was the kids who first asked me why are most cyclists wearing full black and no lights. We then played a game who can spot all the cyclists, and count those with lights and those without. This teaches them to look out for them but also not to put themselves in a position where we have to strain to find them.
