Any crumbs, stale cake, fat from meat can be chopped and fed to the birds. Boil a kettle only with enough water for your needs. Bicarbonate of soda washed down the plughole with lemon juice then boiling water will clean your pipes. Lemon juice is good as a dishwasher rinse. Turn down your heating. Freeze leftovers.

All are worthy of doing (and I do do them) and there lots more but to have a real impact, stop having more than one child, eat and consume less and drive less. It?s simple but not easy and most folk will prefer to ignore the difficult stuff.

-shower weekly

-wash in the morning from max 2pints of water (then slowly progress down to 1/2 pint)

-brush teeth from a small cup of water, not a running tap

-don't wash-up dishes under a running tap

-only use tap to use the water from it, not pour water pointlessly down the drain while you scrub something or wander off

-eat veg

-only flush the brown not the yellow

-catch rain in big tubs ad save washing-up water and water used to wash rice/lentils/pasta, it can all be used on the garden instead of fresh water

-don't waste food

these all play a part in reducing your environmental footprint.

Avoid conspicuous consumption, use things till they fall apart, don't fill the streets with Amazon deliveries, half to be returned. Interesting dynamic as government and business want us to buy things, which is at odds with environmental issues. Men in particular, wee in your compost heap.

Not sure why reducing consumption is not good for the environment. I know there are arguments that consumption is good for business, innovation and the like. But war is good for driving forward innovation and reducing costs of production, but I wouldn't recommend that. As for weeing on your compost, wont a she-wee work? OMG there is a demonstration on Amazon, wont post the link. Sorry for being puerile.

As I understand it, it's not so much because it's easier for men to pee onto the heap, it's because there is something in men's pee which helps to activate the processes in the compost heap, which women's pee doesn't contain.

YY to turning heating down and also if you have central heating don?t turn it all at all until you really need it. Turn lights, screens, anything else off in rooms that you aren?t in.

Not really an eco tip but if you put vinegar in a plastic bag, put it over your shower head, secure with a rubber band and leave it for a bit, it gets all the lime scale off.

Avoid beauty products, stay away from synthetic fabrics.

    • Labour have changed a number of things overnight.   1. VAT on school fees - this has resulted in 25,000 moving until state education. 2. Increasing NICs adding billions to the cost of going to work. 3. Introducing the Employment Rights Bill causing employers to stop hiring. This and item 2 have added 100,000 people to the unemployment scrapheap. These are also causing businesses to relocate further harming the economy. 4. Scrapping all the small boats deterrents meaning 60,000 illegal migrants have arrived in small boats since they were elected. 5. Dishing out huge public sector payroses with no conditions so we have a massively increased payroll and doctors etc arestill going out on strike. 6.changed IHT and non domicile tax rules causing 16,500 millionaires to leave the UK and stop paying any tax here at all forever. 7. Alongside 6, leaving the budget up until an historically late period after the last budget has caused a house price crash, killing the market and decimating government stamp duty receipts. 8. Their profligate borrowing (£100bn extra in just one year) to fund all their lavish promises means the government can now only borrow at the highest ever yields on records. They are more beholden to the bond markets than Liz Truss was. 9. The rate of inflation has doubled under this government. It was a healthy 2% when they came in. For most of the last year, as a result of all of the above it is now nearly 4%.   These are all decisions the Labour government took that have immediate cause and effect.  Its no good harking back to 15 years ago. The current administration was gifted the fastest growing economy in the G7 and within 15 months they have destroyed it.    And things are only going to get worse this winter.

    • A lot to agree with here - don’t get me started on Irish people complaining about immigration! - but that final paragraph is once again a cop out  there’s a lot of extreme right wing money stirring up the division that people are feeling - but there is zero excuse for handing power to these people. We live in a democracy and if we have enough people willing to give it up then judging those people foolish enough to do so is not only something that will happen, it is something that the rest of us should be morally compelled to do  if someone wouldn’t “normally” vote for a racist party yet somehow will do so because they hear someone like me saying that would be bad, then you better believe I’m judging them
