had some ok food there over the years, but the owner bloke's a bit bolshy/macho which is tiresome.

What's the one on Maxted Rd like? Anyone tried it?

I like the Guyanese place under railway bridge in Herne Hill opposite Brockwell park. Used to be a roti place and had roti in the name. They have lovely curries, vegetarian, fish and meat, plus rice and peas and other Guyanese delicacies.

I've passed that one a couple of times Gidget and wondered what the grub's like - must give it a go sometime soon.

Yesterday I got a lunch takeaway after grocery shopping at Rye Lane - the Nigerian takeaway opposite Khans, all on display at the counter looked good, I had a big piece of fried Bream (spicy) ?3 which was huge and lasted to teatime, along with Joliffe rice. I was shocked at ?5 for the rice but it was dead good and a big portion. Like I say, the leftovers formed dinner.

We're so lucky living near all this !

I make my own. Some kidney or black beans, coconut cream, fresh chilli. Yum

The Forest Hill Road supermarket sells various tins of beans that you can substitute for my simple menu. You can also add some plaintain or mango to add an extra dimension.

Got myself some jerk chicken & coleslaw for lunch earlier; ?3.50 can't go wrong. First time I been back there since playing for Dulwich Hamlet few years ago. Still tastes just as good.

I'll second Umana Yana. A little known gem. Excellent home style Guyanese cafe and take-away run by a lovely lady.

Or even some carpet tiles, they'd go down well.
