East Dulwich Primary School recommendations

Hi there,

We are applying for primary schools for our eldest who will start next September and we?re looking for any feedback on ones in the area - we?ve just moved to ED so don?t know much about them but Heber and Goodrich are very close to us and seem like lovely schools from what I?ve researched. Does anyone have any experience of these and are there any others that we should consider? Unfortunately we?re unable to do any tours due to recent lockdown and virtual tours aren?t yet available either...

Any feedback would be much appreciated :)

Thanks.

My sons are at St Anthony's near Dulwich library and both have had a very positive experience. I also have friends with kids at Heber and Goodrich and again have only heard good things. Harris on Lordship lane is also supposed to be excellent, very academic I believe so if you're not keen on lots of homework etc might not be for you. Goose Green has a good reputation, as do Bellenden (smaller school) and a few others. Essentially I think you'll be fine wherever your children end up, as we're very fortunate to have great primaries in East Dulwich. Good luck

Almost all of the schools here are good to very good though they all offer different things, particularly ethos and co-curricular opportunities. The list below isn't in any order:

1. Harris ED and Heber (both of these are very oversubscribed so you'd need to live very close to get in for reception)- both offer specialist teaching in music and art and quality foreign language teaching which is unusual. Harris has a reputation for being more academic between the two but they are both very popular among parents. Heber's grounds are better as Harris's footprint is rather small. Also Heber shares a lot of facilities with Alleyn's private school further extending what they provide. Harris also has access to Alleyn's sporting grounds.

2. Judith Kerr which aims to get the children fluent in German, offers great music and performing arts and has some of the top academic scores in England (50% of its places are allocated via lottery);

3. Dulwich Village Infants Church of England (which is easier to get into than people think) is another popular option and the furthest distance non-church place is about 1km by September)

4. St John and St Clements- great progress scores and great music programme. I know many people happy there!

    • I had certainly heard that Helen Hayes was planning to stand down from being an MP - although I don't think I've seen that confirmed anywhere that I recall. If so, that is a shame, she was generally very competent and she knew the area well. A very good constituency MP and  had performed reasonably creditably in a minor Front Bench role. A loss to Parliamentary politics, in my view, if she is standing down.
    • We've just bought a previously tenanted flat which has come with a large amount of cutlery and cooking utensils which we'd be happy to give away.
    • Sadly this means for those of us who live within this ward the brilliant Helen Hayes will no longer represent us (that is if she's standing again). The Labour candidate for Lewisham West and East Dulwich is Ellie Reeves who has been MP for West Lewisham and Penge before the redrawing of boundaries.  She is sister to Rachel Reeves.
    • Highly recommend Kam Thompson (of Bascoe & Reid) for all your painting and decorating needs.  We've had him back many times and he has now painted our whole house to a fantastic standard. He is also great to have around. His number is 07949507412
