Long gone, but not forgotten worker on iconic 1930's movie..

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I?ve joined this site to try to follow up on some research I have been doing for a talk/lecture I have been writing, as I found I was in a strange way linked to some the early history of the subject.

I'm trying to find any information regarding the couple that owned White's Art shop that used to be at No.9 North Cross Road in the 60's and I think early 70's. it may have been later, and was very probably earlier, I used to purchase drawing pencils there in my youth and quite often chat with them. Does anybody remember them, and their names?

Mr White had worked in the movies on the very first King Kong by RKO and I believe, by some of my research, on Son of Kong, he had on one of the shelves in the shop, part of one of the Kong armatures that, if I remember his story correctly, which whilst on tour with the film, had had part of it stolen and he had kept the remaining piece.

I remember this as being the head, though my mother swears it was the body, can anybody else remember it.

I would like to think that, in some small subliminal way, this may have influenced my choice of profession in later life, (I work in the field of Physical Special Effects) though Star wars did come out in the year before I made a decision to enter the industry.

My internet researches have shown very little information other than he was uncredited for the part he played in the production of the film, that he was listed as a construction technician on King kong (just an unspecified technician on Son of Kong (there was also a C.J. White who worked on this, I have no idea if they were related?)) and his initials were W.G.

If I can find any relevant information regarding him I would love to be able to update his details on the movies database.

    • Yes, that compromise is in not extending the event to two weekends, and keeping it to the one currently.  Yes, I am getting that too, but just go anyway. I intend to.  I will talk to FOPR, and see if there is any interest for a petition from those going to the consultation tm. We just need some volunteers to get together and do the leg work. I've done political party canvassing before, and so can organise a ward by ward schedule. I think it's fair to say that any goodwill some of us had towards working with Gala has gone with this proposed expansion. They are not the same people that started the event with We Are the Fair. At least one of those people actually lived next to the park. The people running things now have no connection to the park or local area and quite frankly are taking the p*** now. Might be worth officially demanding to know where the money the council gets from the festival is actually spent as well.
    • It's a fantastic little place
    • Sadly we need young people from developing countries with higher birth rates to do the work that Brits wont do, including many jobs in health and social care.  How you square this with minimum wages to get work visas I don't know.  A different subject for another thread.   Shortage of skilled workers is another topic.  We could return to the fact that young people from Europe no longer come to the UK for a limited time, to do both skilled and unskilled jobs, but that would bring us back to Brexit and the crazy decision we made as a nation. Some nice analysis by Sky News, tend not to use them as a rule but was surprised by the quality of this piece: https://news.sky.com/story/how-many-illegal-migrants-are-in-britain-the-key-numbers-driving-the-immigration-debate-13428405
    • Would be good if they turned it into something that is social/community driven for housing - old and young mix together. Let’s face it, dearth of social anything relating to housing… if that.could  be combined with say, work area and gardening and cafe for all, everyone wins.. Dream on.. yea… certainly don’t need more large supermarkets, kitchen stores, Argos etc… Haven’t had time to look at plans…
