I said no to "halal turkey" and went for the vegetarian option at a recent xmas meal. I don't actually like turkey, but realise I don't really know what halal means in terms of animal welfare or pain involved in slaughter. Can anyone help?

For example I would only buy free range chicken - but does halal chicken mean its free range too? is all halal meat now stunned before slaughter?

Thanks

Hi womanofdulwich

In short, Abraham Natural Produce would rather all animals were slaughtered without stunning .

However most abattoirs in the UK, unless purpose built for halal slaughter, use stunning on animals.

Where we are based in the UK there are no Muslim abattoirs.

We therefore have no option but to stun our produce as only animals processed through abattoirs can be sold for human consumption.

On top of this we are bound by organic standards which demand that any animal solds as "organic" must be stunned before being stuck.

The stun used is a very low voltage that knocks the animal out for around 15-20 seconds.

After 20 seconds it is potentially back to normal and during that 20 seconds it is alive and breathing.

This means that when the animal is cut it still bleeds the animal properly.

I am really fussy about what chicken I will buy. Good welfare chicken and turkey supplier is at Herne Hill market on Sundays and Brockley on Saturdays. Fosse Meadows Farm - they used to be local Peckham boys but now have a farm up in Leicestershire. You can try their chicken before you buy as they cook the breasts there to taste. Also serve sandwiches. They do chicken burgers, chicken sausages, as well as whole chickens and parts including livers.

    • I'd have thought they could use some of  their income from hiring out a large part of Brockwell Park in the summer (therefore, as I understand it, preventing local residents from using much of it) to put on a firework display there  in the autumn which might somewhat make up to those residents for the previous loss of use of the park. And also generate goodwill.
    • Clicking on your name, I see you've made seven posts on here since you joined  around four years ago, and they've all been about local libraries. And none of the posts are  very pleasant. Care to share with the rest of us where  your particular interest in libraries comes from? Do you work in one of them?
    • Kam was with us last week to wallpaper a bedroom. He was a pleasure to deal with and did a fantastic job - very neat and matched the tricky pattern very well. Would certainly use again.
    • What a bunch of pieholes. 2025 and you peasants have nothing to be grateful for. I have been inside the library recently and honestly the old girl is crying for a facelift, the goddamn carpet looks like it survived the world war and some. The Library is one of the oldest in Southwark and you are crying about a study place? What a bunch of bullshit. You have libraries all around you for your kids to go their studying you rotten sausage. How about be happy that the library is going to look absolutely stunning rather than be a whining bitch about it   Also, I have been told that the staffs have to work in the smaller libraries together. How do you think they feel?
