pebbledash advice/painting required

Hi there,

we were thinking of having the pebbledash on our house removed but the costs are very high. So now we're considering repainting however the current coat of paint is coming off in small patches all over so probably needs to be removed - or at least rubbed down but very difficult due to the texture of the damn stuff. I think it is called 'wet dash' so the stones were mixed in with the cement before being applied. The dash itself seems sound, just the paint that is flaky. We need good professional advice and help in getting it sorted. Can anyone recommend a company that may be able to help us? (maybe a house painting specialist?)

there must be some kind of bonding agent you can paint on to bond the surface, giving you a better crack at painting the dash and the paint actually sticking.

you can't rub it down unless you used maybe a loose wire brush, but that might score the cement areas of the dash, leaving traces you may not want.

pulling dash off can sometimes pull off the surfaces of some bricks, I think it depends partly onhow strong the mix was. removed my dash once with a hand bolster and heavy club hammer, took like 2 days, the mix was pretty soft so hardly lost any brick - but needed to repoint afterwards.

Hello there, I've painted a few pebble dashed houses before and the best thing to do is use a wire brush to remove any loose and flaky paint, then apply a coat of stabilising solution to ALL of the area to be painted. That way the paint will stick really well to the pebble dash. It's best to put the first coat of paint on with a brush so you can get into all the really awkward areas you would miss with a roller! Time consuming but the best way to do it. The next couple of coats you can put on with a special long pile roller and just use the brush to touch in any areas you might not have got to. Use good quality paint also as it will cover better and last much longer.

    • Yes, thanks, that's true, the previous information on here might be out of date even if I could find it. I was hoping someone on here might have up to date info. I will phone them in the morning.  I had a previous thread on here about the Oxfam book shop but for various reasons I haven't been able to get stuff down there, and now I just want it out of the way.
    • Best to call them. What might have been the case last week may not be now. There's also Oxfam book shop in HH
    • Because it's easier to ask on here than have to make a special trip out when I'm very busy and also expecting deliveries 🙄 And then possibly have to go out again with the books. And I thought I remembered a previous discussion on here. Isn't that what a local forum's for?
    • Our very large apartment in a converted industrial building in the area is very unusual so we are keen to find a really good local estate agent who may have experience  in marketing and selling unique properties in the area and who  can 'think outside the box' . We already know of all the agents who deal in unusual properties throughout London (ie not just in this area)  eg 'The Modern House' etc etc. thanks for any tips!
